Stub strut bushing (one piece) install

I have a set of Direct Connection stub strut bushings - one piece, not the two piece - for my Shelby Charger. These have been sitting in my garage for probably like 20 years, but I seem to remember that they are very difficult to install since they are not the two piece design. I also seem to remember that a trick to get them installed was to cut them in half to make it two pieces. Anyone have experience with this?
