So I'm new to this forum, but not new to turbo Mopars. Here is the project my cousin and I built last year. Started building around January last year, started its first event July 9th, and finished its first event August 13th. Everything was fabricated in my garage...the only thing we didn't do was weld the cage (had a professional offer to do it very cheap, so it was hard to say no- we bent and notched everything, and brought it to him all tacked together). So here it is:

The car:
Complete custom tube frame built in front of the engine

The Drivetrain:
2.4 Stratus block
8.5:1 .020 over JE pistons
Eagle rods
150,000 mile DOHC Neon head (tuning issues at the first event destroyed the head, so I drove 4 hours home, pulled the head off my DD, and drove back to the race...I got back at 6 am and went to sleep while my cousin started putting the head back on...in a dirt parking lot no less...and we got it running again, but were scared to take another run that day without proper tuning...as full time college students with full time jobs on the side, we have yet to have time to put a better head on it)
SRT-4 oiling system
SRT-4 Turbofold modified for an external WGA
SRT-4 intercooler
Stock 1st gen Neon transmission and axles

Suspension:
Front
Neon k-frame
Neon knuckles
Neon LCA's
Custom adapters to bolt knuckle to stock car Upper A-arm
Late Model coilovers

Rear
Complete stock Neon front suspension

What do you think?

I think it looks like a handful to drive up the mountain-and a blast:eyebrows: Good work:thumb: Was it built just for the climb or are you gonna do something else with it?

Thanks! We built it specifically for hillclimb, but we will definitely autocross it, and I'd love to see what it can do in a quarter mile...

I'd be DDing it.... As far as the transmission, is it simply a braked automatic? I don't see you shifting, but I can't see your left hand. I think I'd run a 3 speed braked auto with a manual valve body.

It is actually a T350 5speed out of a first gen neon. Factory shift cables wouldn't reach to the right but they reach perfectly to the left of the seat. so we shift with the left hand. Doesn't take as much getting used to as you would think. Srt4 shifter mounted backwards gets some looks lol. Same gate pattern just on the wrong side

very nice, not much to look at but clearly works well lol. Need to do another one off the ground for off road fun too!

I'd be willing to bet that a set of 29-30" all terrains on the rear would take that machine, as it sits, more places than most people will ever need to go. My guess is it has a full underpan that protects everything. If that's the case, just hit the mud/dirt/rocks/streams with some speed and let it slide across.

Thanks guys! I did post on neons.org a while back... I'll try to find that thread. It has a 3/16 steel belly from the front k-frame to the main hoop, and a 3/16 aluminum skid plate from there back. Once we get coilovers on the back, 30" Mud Swampers would fit no problem ;)

That's one sweet ride! I've always wanted to do something like that, but living in the Midwest doesn't allow for much utilization. That's a really cool project for a 6-8 month build.
