I have probably 1,000 miles in the last year on my oil. It looks like new when I check it. Does it break down just sitting there, or is it ok to change based on miles.

I would change it. Acids and "garbage" from the motor running did not have time to boil off, as is normal. They can affect longevity of the engine. If it just sat, you can probably get away with it.

Just change it every spring.

Your fine changing it once a year with mileage like that. Oil is so good these days(minus the zinc issue), your not hurting it.
