Ok how do you tell which springs are which? The springs are off the struts. Yes I know what is front and what rear is :) putting 493 together and john (guy who owns the car) has multiple springs in his storage. One set is LRE and another set is GLH and there may be another set in there somewhere. His son didn't mark them which is which. Is there a measurement I can take? like height or something?

If they still have part numbers on them, that would be the most straight forward... Otherwise it may come down to size of the wire and how many coils... The height might not be accurate as they can sag over time, but the coils and diameter can't change.

That all said, I don't have that info at hand, but perhaps someone out there does?...

Mike

If all else fails, I've got a set off a GLHS I can check, but that begs the question, are they the same as the "regular" GLHt?

I think the GLH glht and glhs springs are all the same iirc.

I have the specs for the front LRE springs in my notes. When I get a break I'll get them and post them up. It'll be active coil count, diameter, and free height. I have the stock specs for my 87 Horizon springs too not sure that would help you though. FWIW the LRE springs are MUCH shorter than the stockers.

Well if you know how much you weigh and stand on them against a yardstick, then you can get rough lbs per inch like that... but use a pointer or something to get a close inch reading or you might not tell the diff between say 140 and 160.

Here you go;
LRE
Free length ~11.25"
Coil diamter .645"
# of active coils 4
Spring diameter 6.5"

Stock
Free Length 15.75/16.25
Coil diamter .550
# of active coils 5
Spring diameter 6.5"

Using those figures and calculating the spring rate for the LRE I get around 221 lb/in..and the stockers at 117 lb/in.

For reference this is the formula I used
G*d^4/8ND^3
G=11,250,000 (modulus of steel)
d=diameter of coils
8=constant for all coil springs
N=Number of active coils
D=mean coil diamter in inches

Can someone else run the numbers and tell me if they get the same values? I got the formula out of Herb Adams Chassis Engineering book.

Ok well I got some springs. They measure 13.5 inches tall. Dunno what the hell they are lol.

How many active coils are there? Get the info for them like I posted above. I bought my LRE springs second hand but listed as new. It's possible the PO cut them.

I'll take some pictures when I get home.

If you can use a dial caliper to measure the coil diameter.

Ok the ones he gave me are stock. His LRE springs are on the car. Thanks again man!!!

This doesn't help ID the springs, but here are the rates:

According to MP , the Shelby springs are a bit heavier

From Mopar 2.2/FWD speed secrets & racing modifications
for Chrysler FWD cars book:

Front Springs:

85 lb/in. standard,
120 lb/in. HD,
145 lb/in. Shelby,
180 lb/in. MP Autocross and Rallying.

Rear Springs:

90 lb/in. standard,
110 lb/in. HD,
135 lb/in. Shelby,
145 lb/in. MP Autocross and Rallying.

The LRE Autocross springs (according to Bill Lambros) are

Front: 195-200 lb/in.
Rear: 185 lb/in

Wow that's a pretty high rate on the LRE rear's. Anybody running those on the rear?

I have them in both my GLH and GLHS.
The GLH has KYB GR-2 struts and rides nice.

The GLHS has Konis and is a bit stiffer.

Both corner like slot cars.

Slot cars handle tail out and can actually oversteer if you do it wrong :p

Do you run a rear sway bar with either of those cars?

Addco rear bar on the GLH. It's mounted over the stock bar.
Stock bar on the GLHS

Is the steering neutral on the cars? I have Johnny's 1" rear bar and a 1 1/8" in the front. I have LRE front springs and I have a set of 150 lb/in rear springs I can try out.

The GLH is very neutral. It handles as well as my 2005 MINI Cooer S did.
