1st gen Neon 16:1 power rack from Rock Auto modded for a 1985 GLH:

We later had to trim down the passenger side inner and outer tie rod ends to get the toe in spec. Apparently the rack mounts offset on a Neon. Also, the high and low pressure lines are reversed so you need to do a little "re-bending".

Wow good stuff, thanks for sharing! Is 16:1 good? Do you know how many lock to lock turns that is?

Also, Neon guys use the P-body racks. Apparantly some are 14:1.

Yeah, my understanding was the Neon rack is the same length as a P- G-, etc. body rack. The L-Body rack is about an inch shorter, I thought?

The fast shelby power steering rack found in shelby inspired cars is 14:1.
The 1st Generation Neon power steering rack is 16:1. (This rack will also work on 80s cars with slight adaptations)

The normal power steering rack found in basically everything else is 18:1.

The manual steering racks found in early lbodies and neons is 22:1.

I just picked it up because it was readily available (unlike the 14:1 rack). I'm sending my GLH rack out to be rebuilt.

Also: A1 Cardone sucks. The monkeys overtightened a plug (w/ spring) on the pump and destroyed the nylon seal. I have 1 night left to get this car ready for inspection and the pump is pissing everywhere.

I hope the rebuild kit at my local Autozone has the nylon seal in it.

I know this is an old thread, but curious about how this worked? I'm looking to go with something that is either new or will hold up or possibly inner tie rods that won't seemingly wear out quickly. I put a new rack in my car maybe a year ago and with probably 2 autocrosses, it seems it is out or not doing well. I feel some play in the steering and when I got under the car I could move it every so slightly back and forth. Either the internals are worn or the tie rods, but at this point I don't want to pull it to fix it if it would be better to go with another make that is better, stronger, etc.

Anyone have suggestions on a good rack or would the newer ones for the Neons be an upgrade and last longer?

+1, or something with a quicker ratio?
