Hey guys, looking for some advice..i have an 89 spirit with the 3.0..a week ago the fuel pump went out in it,i replaced the pump and now the car randomly stall out..it acts like the pump shuts off, once it stalls if you cycle the key a few times it will start right up and run fine again..any ideas???

Did you replace the filter at the same time? The filters for teh 3.0 apps seem really crappy these days and they want them yearly to behave nice.

Also other things to consider are gummed up injectors, and AIS problems.

yea,i put a new filter on it..the old pump got so hot it melted the solder on the wire terminals that connect to the pump in the tank.had to replace those terminals cause they were soldered to the pump..wondering if the fuel relay got messed up cause of that or if i got a bad connection somewhere.

Did you install the sock properly? I've seen many mess that up and the pump dies within hours.

Check the wiring and the ASD relay controls the fuel pump and coil so its possible you damaged it. An easy way to see if the pump is ok is after it stalls, hook power to the coil + terminal, KEY OFF and see if you have fuel pressure.

i got a chance to look at it some more, the asd relay plug was partially pulled loose, the clip was still holding it but the opposite side of the plug was out some.fixed that and i am going to take it for a drive and see if that fixed it..hope it did!

Yea,that didnt fix it...going to rig up a T fitting so i can check fuel pressure next..

Hmmm, I think Ondonti found some peculiarities or fail spots in that body's pump wiring, but I don't recall details... or even enough likely words to hammer the search with... might be buried in one of the megathreads.

Ok,so i finally got a T fitting put together and checked the fuel pressure.it has a solid 39-40 psi when idling or revving it up.the idle still seems too low.hangs around 500 rpm and dips to like 350 or so before stalling..fuel pressure stays at 40 even when car is turned off so looks like something else is wrong.i plan to drive it around some on friday with my fuel pressure tester hooked up and sitting on the windshield so i can watch what that is doing..any other thoughts? idle control motor? map?,is there an egr valve? seen fords act crazy when egr is stuck open, what about the cat? i only have code 12 and 55 when i check codes so there isn't anything stored.

AIS (idle control valve) could be clogged up. EGR would cause a rough low idle.

OK,new update..drove it around with the gauge hooked up.fuel pressure was good and the car didnt stall..got home and let it idle and slowly the fuel pressure dropped and the car stalled..try to restart..nothing!! cycle the key and the pump would do it's 3 second or so prime but no fuel pressure.after cycling the key like 8 times the pressure would come back..i also noticed that the fuel pressure when driving would fluctuate alot, the needle was bouncing all over the place..any ideas?

Either you messed up the pump installation or the sock came off. The supplied fuel pump hose sucks and see this warning. Its also possible the pump is faulty.

yea,i left that pulsator thing in place,i used good fuel injection hose for the pump..i can't imagine i messed up the install, been changing pumps for many years with no issue but could have happened..i will have to pull it and see whats up.

i think i got it fixed, going to drive it some this week and make sure, when i put the pump in to the assy i pinched the o-ring at the base where the pump seats into "bowl" that the strainer attaches to..i would imagine that could cause pump to loose suction..i also removed that plastic pulsator valve.before you would have to cycle the key a few times after bleeding off fuel pressure before it would build 40 psi,now it does it on first turn of key..

whelp,i have had enough..time for a drastic change..just bought another 89 spirit es for parts, but this ones a 2.5 turbo/auto..the body and interior are ruff so pulling drivetrain, wiring etc and putting it in my car..had enough of this smoking 3.0 anyways..lol..
