Is the dealer my only option for input shaft shims?

How did you make them Bryan?

I just shimmed the one in the new 568 and it is ~.0035 endplay so was thinking about trying something...

Dig thru spare seal retainer housings to find a slightly longer nosed one
-or-
Take a thicker shim and sand it down thinner
-or-
Take a thicker shim and sand the end of the seal retainer housing

Is the dealer my only option for input shaft shims?

certain ones are NLA, others are still available. I ran every single p/n with a dealership and wrote it down somewhere...

Most all of them are available scattered around the country in various dealerships if theres a specific p/n-thickness you need.

JT, I used brass shimming material. I used a couple utility blades to score the brass and eventually cut through it (on the thicker stuff). On the thinner brass, just plane old sharp scissors. I tried tin snips on the thicker stuff but it distorts the heck out of it plus the teeth marks from the snips. They obviously were too large for the I.D., too. Took a little bit but they came out sorta round......kind of like stock l-body rims!:D:p

I was thinking steel with making a punch and die... but BRASS! That's it man :thumb:For longevity, steel would be better, but I did not have anything that small to mod and not sure I could get it thin enough without removing skin from my digits. We used brass in a lot of the machines I used to work on and it held up pretty well. Besides, the input shaft isn't moving back and forth an inch or two and beating up the shims, so it should be ok.

Shims for a Dana 80 axle are the correct (or at least close enough) id/od for input shaft shims on our manual transmissions.

Ratech Manufacturing (ratechmfg.com) has a shim kit - part # 1132. The shims are 1.640" ID and 1.940" OD.

The 1132 kit contains shims with the following thicknesses (assuming my micrometer is accurate):
Size qty
.010" 1
.012" 2
.016" 1
.020" 1

If any of those thicknesses will work for you, the shim kit is $12 and it looks like you can now order them online from their website.

I did and have used a few. I dont recall what the thickness of the shims that came in the set were though.

They were listing this which is not as promising.
"Part Number 1132

Description: Pinion pre-load shim pack

ID. 1.640
OD. 1.940
thickness range .020-.050"

I think that was an outdated link that I searched for on their site. I ordered 2 sets. They said they have 2,000 in stock after I told them I was worried about parts disappearing.
