ok how humped am i!?!

took off the intake side rocker arm assembly to put
the new FWD lifters in, everything went great there , go to tighten down the
shafts, got the shaft seated all the way across, i start on the #1 bolt that it
say's to start tightening from the chrysler ENGINE & CHASSIS manual- my
wrench was set at 120inch lbs... and just when the bolt got hard to turn snap!!!
damn thing snaps in half!http://www.turbododge.com/forums/images/smilies/banghead.gif

thank
the almighty that i was able to get the bottom of the bolt out with out having
to drill it out..

who has run into this? why the F! did it happen if i
wasn't even at full torque.?

aren't these things supposed to have grade 8
bolts on them?

all the bolts looked the same, the middle of the bolt
looks skinny and the flares wide again before the top hat of the bolt head, but
i dont know if this is normal or if that means there stretched!?!

i'll
post pictures tomorrow of the bolts...

HELP ANY ONE?!

The only way to snap them is too over tighten them. I am suspecting you set your torque wrench to ft/lbs and not inch/lbs. The only thing I've done is strip out the bolt holts and had to heli-coil them.

Not sure what you are posting but no pics etc, its all gobbly gook, :p

that's what i was thinking to that i had over tightend em.. my little wrench only does inch lbs and the lowest setting which i had it on was 120 inchlbs..

called cindy @ FWD and she say's that is common to snap them before they reach the full torque.. for those who have been in the same boat, she recommended going to fastenal and they should have a replacement.

hope it works.

Honestly, I've had a few apart, and never had one snap, but I do this for a living so I know the "feel", lol.

dang it man i dont know what i did wrong, i was a tech for years, and couldnt stand the lack of money, so im in sales now, i dont work on them full time any more, but have in the past done a ton of head jobs.. and honestly it didn't feel hard or like it was getting stressed, but i had to have had something wrong for it to snap.

gonna try it again tonight.. keeping my fingers crossed!!

You might want to check all your other bolts to see if any are 'necked down' or stretched. I snapped one before doing it 'by feel'(doing just about anything by feel is ill advised on a TIII:confused:) and when I looked at the bolts, I had stretched 3 others:(

LOL, that's the grade your looking for. Grade 5 is standard, your looking for metric, you need a 8x1.25 threaded bolt. 10.9 should be ok too.

Rocker shaft bolts are necked down in the center to let the oil pass by thru the shaft so I would not use just any regular bolt in there. Turn it down if you do.....

If you look at the bolt, its got a thinner part under the bolt head, that's probably where it snaps if you over tighten them.
