I found an engine for sale locally. It is a Masi 16v engine, this is what the add says. "this is an engine that was a prototype from ECS/ROUSH Racing. This was designed for Chrysler for the 24 Hours of Daytona, by De Tomaso and Maserati this is a Turbo" Does anybody know anything about this? There are pictures of the motor with the normal Masi valve cover, and a valve cover that says "Chrysler by De Tomaso" on top and "DOHC 16V" on the bottom.

It is definitely a turbo. It is on craigslist here somewhat locally, maybe an hour from me. I e-mailed the guy for some more info, but no response. I honestly don't have the money right now unless it is dirt cheap. The guy just says make offer... Anyway, it would be nice to see a fellow member get this. Here is the link to the add: http://atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/cto/3144221728.html

This thread should probably be moved to the ebay/adds section.

3rd pic is a Talon engine, 4g63.

Not an expert but based on the pics posted here, looks like a regular Masi motor.

Indeed.

I'm surprised the usual suspects haven't scooped it up yet.

Turbo and manifolds look stock, T-couple in the In Mani so that's not stock. Fuel lines are 'late style', 89's and early went over the VC not around like this one (and the 90 Masi motors) so this being proto is questionable IMO... Wondering why a race motor has an AC bracket:confused: Weird for sure

Talk to the guy about the motor last night, he is a bank liquidator. The bank put an appraisal of $5000 on the motor and I about choked on my drink after he said that. He seems to think that the motor is something special that has something to do with Roush Racing, but no documentation. As far as the valve cover, it might be an early production cover when Masi wanted to deal with Chrysler and maybe they change it after the first run. He did say the motor has ties with a company in Alabama, but I asked around today with the guys that would know and they have no history or word of it being a 24hr motor.

Maybe for the Indy engine... Not so much on the rest.

Yeah, that's waaaaaay out of my price range!!! I was thinking it could be snagged for a couple hundred, but I'm not going to mess with that.

Trouble with a "didn't happen" motor, if one or more of those are one, is everyone can go round saying they had a motor intended for Daytona, LeMans, The Moon Rover, etc but it didn't happen.

I saw that to and also wondered why they would write "stock intake".

The whole thing is odd, If it wasn't for that valve cover, I would think it is just a normal Masi 16v. Has anybody seen a valve cover like that before?

Clue?

If you look closely at the DeTomaso valve cover, you can see the bolt pattern does not match the motor in the pic or a regular production Masi 16v head. Unfortunately it doesn't look like it would be useable.

$5000, damn, high hopes. Good luck with that, lol.

Appears to be a stock production TC by Masi motor and a seperate pre-production Masi valve cover. Motor looks stock and pretty complete so should definitely be worth something, but nowhere near $5k. The valve cover is unique and pretty rare, but it's also useless without a prototype head to bolt it onto, and valuable only to Chrysler/Maserati/Detamoso enthusiasts.

edit: it's possible the motor did come from Roush, I seem to recall maybe Rick D he had a bunch of development stuff from them. As it appears to be all stock though I would guess it was just simply an extra from Chrysler.

I had called/left voice mail and also emailed but never got a response, and that was when the ad was still up.

I have only ever seen 1 other valve cover like that, and yes, Rick Diogo has it. It is a preproduction valve cover. You can tell because of the multitude of bolts around ther perimeter. This can only be used on a preproduction head with the special preproduction gasket. Good luck finding one. I've seen a few preproduction heads ( I almost bought one), but without the other specialty stuff to be able to use it, it's a neat conversation peice, but pretty useless as a real engine part to run a car.

I have seen 3 of these cars within 100 miles that had good running engines that could not sell the whole car for $1K. The cars were not in bad shape.

good running 16v 5spd setups? or were they 2.2 8v Auto's or 3.0 V6's.

Well I don't recall beat up 3.0s selling much below $1K, but I haven't paid too much attention to them overall.

16V 5speed. If no one wants to buy an oddball car, they don't sell. At the time, I knew that they were rare, but was not interested. My wife is loosing her sense of humor about my "used car lot". My 91 R/T will be the last car I get for a while, until so go away! 7 we are driving and two that I am parting out.

Who wouldn't. Pull the motor and double your money right there. Worst attempt to sell a car ever if they can't get 1K for a masi motored car.

The think is, if you don't visit internet forums, most people just think it is an old odball car that you can't get parts for. For me it's kind of like a Crossfire, they are kind of neat, and cheap, but if anything goes wrong, almost empossible to get parts for. Before the internet forums the TIII was just a weird engine, that always broke and was not supported by Chrysler.

You know, if you're bashing the 16V Masi TC's AND the Crossfire's all in one post we're gonna have an issue:p
