I know it's not a Mopar, but if it pays... haha! This is a clients 1963 Impala with an LQ4 (6.0L Iron block LS) swap with a built 4L65E trans. It's a cool cruiser that's on bag's and 20's, and seeing as he's a big turbo guy having owned three different Nissan Skylines and a TT G35, this next step was natural. The goal of the project is purely to blow people's minds at car shows and make cool noises while cruising. It'll be incredibly fast spooling with such an undersized turbo combo, but that's half the fun of it. :)

I'll update this with more pictures (and ones from a real camera, not my phone) as it progresses. Note the modified Kwik Performance "hot rod" AC/ALT/PS brackets to clear the hood and make room for the headers. Still need to build the intake manifold, intercooler setup, and lay in a new wiring harness to get rid of the mess the person made that put the swap in the chassis. And the fuel system, and tucking a 4" exhaust so it can ride laid out. Enjoy!

What's the pipe size leading into the turbine flange? Looks tiny, so I'm sure it'll produce some wicked velocity and reduced lag. Awesome work, as always!!! don't you get bored of hearing that? lol

I thought at first glance you'd rat rodded the case of a dead crafstman impact or similar into it, and I was like  ... took me a second to tell it was a light, doh. :D

It's 1.875" primaries to a 2.500" secondary, which reduces to 2.000" into the SS flex bellows and up into the divided T4 turbine flange. Yes, it will have hella velocity, and likely hella backpressure too.

Twin TiAL MVR44 wastegates will be added shortly in a very cool manner, and then the hotside of the system is pretty well wrapped up.

Thanks guys, glad you enjoy seeing it. :)

I've tried to, but he's fairly mythical and hard to keep an eye on. I heard he was at SDAC in the parking lot offering to build SS tube headers free of charge but there were no takers, as everyone had perfectly good ported stockers. Hahahaha! :eyebrows:

Sorry bud, I was indeed there but not for every event. Friday night I was at the parking lot for a while, and Sunday my family and I strolled through the car show.

Yeah right! I think we all just got distracted by the FJ that wanted to run over DJ, and a certain red mustang doing multiple lackluster attempts at a burnout, with a winner now and then ;)

I had flown into town at 2AM that morning and had been running on 3 hrs of sleep all day till 1AM sat morning in the hotel lot... i thought I was doing pretty well! Not

More to come. The wastegate recirculation should be a really wicked looking piece, and that'll be next. Intercooler next probably, and the intake manifold to top it all off while the wiring harness is finished off and the fuel system components start showing up.

Thanks guys! Enjoy!

Nice! Can you get a pic of the car itself too? My buddy that I am working with to try and start our own performance shop is a big Chevy guy, and has a soft spot for the early 60's Impalas, he will love to see this. We are planning on building one of his early 70's Camaros up w/ a turbo V8, similar to the F-bomb.

Also, what is the purpose of stepping up the secondary size and then dropping it? Fitment, or engineering?

RoadWarrior222
07-15-2012, 02:43 PM
I'd imagine you would get low resistance higher in the header, then increase velocity into the turbo, which has smaller area inlets you'll notice, and may as well make the transition smooth prior to entry. Looks like it's double tuned for two areas of resonance though. Thinner pipe all the way up and you maybe couldn't keep it short enough, and stick your torque peak at 1500 rpm or something.

I wish you guys luck with it!

I'll get some pictures when I can set it back down on the ground. I've got it up on all stands to work around it a bit easier until all the tidy up work is done underneath. It'll probably be a bit. I'll see what the owner already has of it perhaps.

There's both fitment and engineering to the tubing sizing. Some of it aesthetically driven, some for power production, and some that are unique to this combination (such as the 2.0" section, as it fits flush to the divided T4 entry best.) Piping sizing isn't terribly critical unless you're looking to optimize everything about the setup, ie spool, power, etc. Since this app has a undersized turbo to begin with and it's goal is street friendly and fun powerband, I can get away with certain things since losing 20HP here or there isn't the end of the world.

It can be fairly critical on an oversized turbo application looking for max power. I'm sure some people will debate that though.

There's nothing pictured that's TI on that car. What were you asking about specifically?

Every piece of the turbo system componentry is 304SS, welded with 308L rod of varying sizes for varying situations.

Oh, okay. Same answer, all 304SS.

Wastegate recirculation is done on the downpipe. This is done in a slip fit configuration where the 1.75" WG outlet tubes will slip fit inside these 1.875" pieces on the downpipe. This is done for ease of installation purposes. It's an odd, in a neat way, looking piece off the car. Once seen installed it will make perfect sense. :)

Thanks, just start practicing! And work on keeping your breathing and heartrate steady.

No, the concept is to leave the hotside components in the brushed SS appearance and it will gold up very nicely, as seen in the following pics of a GT35R Evo I did. Everything on the colside will be a fully polished SS, and the plenum on the intake manifold will be polished as well once completed, with black runners.

Freshly made of Ti for Simon.

Now you can see how that kind of odd looking downpipe assembly comes into play.

The rest of the pieces are falling into place. Brand new Eddy intake will go into the bandsaw soon to be chopped up and changed around.

The guy's are messing around, it's not Ti, it's SS. And yes, I do worry about heat. I think the radiator fans are going to have a shortlived lifespan, but the owner is accepting of sacrifices for the "holy crap" look on people's faces at car shows.

I've been busy with some really big things lately, so the Impala took the sideline for a bit. A big thanks to the owner, Rich, for being patient with me. This weekend is an Impalathon, so hopefully all the fab work will be entirely wrapped up end of tomorrow.

For now, Alan can get mad that there is yet another intake manifold configuration on the car. This one is staying though! It'll just be altered cosmetically from here.

Enjoy!

Internally welded intake plenum, .125" wall 4" OD 90* bends is what it starts as. I cut up the perfectly nice Edelbrock intake for this, haha! Also useable as a small canoe.

Kicked down neck for belt routing clearance with the altered location of the accesories, for header clearance... for downpipe clearance... for everthing clearance.

I wish I could make this more symmetrical, but with the charge pipes there comes a time where you just have what you have room for. Note the ovalized tubing to clear behind the stock headlight buckets, and the strange kick and roll is all in the name of hood, header, and radiator clearances.

I actually remember saying "beast" as well. Hell if I know where/how it came from either though!

This was actually the plan from the get-go, as soon as we decided on not using the stock intake. The stock LS based intake is just so boring and ugly looking, and I think this really sets the system apart in conjunction with the rest of the package.

I only have two real projects actually! I sold the race Talon for my brother to a gentleman in Guam, got rid of all of my Turbo Mopar's besides my Shelby Lancer (great DD!), and sold both the 72 and the 71 Demon. My projects have been my business startup, and my 01 Viper TT. :) One of those has made very slow progress, can you guess which? :o
