View Full Version : Exhaust manifold leak

So found why I am getting NO BOOST! So I had a blow off valve on, JB welded it...bad idea... It had a leak through it. At that time I was reaching 12PSI when my ecu is set to 15psi. Took the blow off valve off, covered the hole with silicone tubing. After that, BOOM exhaust leak and ZERO boost. Jacked up the car and crawled underneath. A fresh slit in the exhaust manifold right where the turbo bolts on. Just leaking out pressure like no other. Now, question is, did the leak happen because all the pressure build up had no where to go so it found a weak spot and blew through it? And can this be fixed for does it need to be completely replaced? If it needs to be replaced, what can I do to prevent this from happening again?
Pictures posted below.
Thanks in advance.

Catalytic converter could be clogged.

Considering how cheap they are, I'd replace that exhaust manifold.

I have no catalytic converter.

If it just went boom, and you just took the pic straight after, that's actually a hella lot of black to be seeing on that pipe there, unless you're spitting raw fuel in the exhaust and that's what went boom.

What turbo? Did you use a gasket between the turbo and manifold? If so, that's most likely why, we don't use gaskets as they, wait for it, blow out, lol.

AiResearch T04 turbo. I did have a gasket between the turbo and mani. So do you figure thats why it split? If not, then is there any explainations to why this happened? I have a new one on order, how can I prevent this from happening again?

You don't use a gasket.

Okay I need some more advice please. I am getting a mechanic who specializes in these engines to install the new manifold. He says that I need the gasket in between the turbo and mani or else it will leak. He has never heard of a broken gasket causing a split in the manifold. His thought of the reason for the split was cause of the EGT probe being there.
Does anyone have any other possible reasons for this manifold burst?

Ok, for the 10th time, there is NO gasket between the turbo and manifold. END OF STORY.

Your specialist has no clue if he thinks there is a gasket there and isn't an expert in these engines. If you must use something, use wheel bearing grease, it cotterizes when it gets hot.

Pics of split.

I doubt he specializes in these engines if he says there is suppose to be a gasket between the turbo and manifold.

If you HAVE to have a gasket you can coat the mating surfaces with anti-seize. That's what I do.

Machine the turbo and manifold flat and be done with it. No gasket needed.

Not quite the end of story, first I'd like to know where they are even getting a gasket. I don't want one, I just didn't even know they were available.

Thanks
Randy
