View Full Version : Deck oil restrictor missing ('85 2.2L TI)

I'm building an '85 2.2L Turbo I motor out of a Shelby Charger. When I disassembled the engine, I found there was no oil restrictor in the deck. Did the early motors not get (or need) this piece? Is it a bad idea to run without it?

At any rate, I'm putting the motor back together in a relatively stock configuration. I just picked up the block and head from the machine shop today and will be assembling shortly. Where can I get one of these restrictors? I don't think I have any lying around here.

Yes, they all should have them, it stops the head from getting full oil pressure, which COULD cause the engine to starve if run hard enough, or simply flood the valvetrain with oil and cause oil burning issues and valve cover leaks-they are bad enough as it is. I think you can buy them new or make something.

Some N/A engines did not have them (my 2.2 tbi didnt and still doesnt). Probably more necessary for the turbo engines since they essentially have an extra 'oil leak' via needing to provide pressure lubrication to the turbocharger. But then again the fsm here (94 edition) points out a restrictor but only for the 2.5 engines.

I can probably scrounge one up since I do save them from every engine block I have had pass through here. Not sure of availability status from chrysler anymore.

According to my '88 FSMs, only the 2.5 engines got the restrictor, and the 2.2 did not. I haven't checked the other years to see if anything is mentioned.

My 85 t1 did not have one. My 86 t1 did have one. I took the one out of the 86 and put it in the 85 block.

Last I checked they were still available from Chrylser. Pretty sure they were supposed to be there. At least in turbo applications. I have seen many that were missing on engine teardown. This doesn't surprise me at all. If it's confusing to us, it was confusing to assembly line workers too.

That's weird that only turbo engines would get them factory wise. I've honestly never seen an n/a or turbo engine without one. Guess it came down to how much the worker partied the night before, lol.

I have an extra if you need it. I can bring it to SDAC if your going.

Very well could be. :D

Thanks all.

Shadowjake, unfortunately I can't make SDAC, but if you can send me one in the mail after you get back that would be awesome. Would be more than willing to cover postage.

I found a part number - 4323808 - can anybody confirm this is for the deck restrictor? I searched this part number at wholesalemopar and it couldn't find it. Looks like it be disco.

That is the correct number.

Are you at SDAC? I I have a new one in my trunk here.

Ah Bummer; nope I couldn't make SDAC this year. I had to take my vacation in early June so SDAC was out the window. If you don't sell it there I would gladly buy it from you though!

I went to the dealership last Friday and sure enough, it is no longer available. Parts guy said it was used in '87-'00 models.

What used an oil restrictor through 2000 ?

Possibly the 2L or 2.4L? I never looked that close.

While reassembling my motor I found that it never had an oil restrictor either. I ended up making one from stainless steel rod, measured around .394" in diameter with a 0.125" orifice.

That's pretty cool. I lucked out and found a NOS one from Shadowjake.

While searching for info on it a few months ago, I found a thread where a guy used a 9mm casing and I guess that works too.
