85 600 key starts fine then the problen begins......

Key starts engine perfectly. however when driving the starter suddenly engages.

I've checked the key switch at the set up at the end of the column rod (seems ok, difficult to check while driving), I've also checked the starter relay and it tests ok.

The only alternative I think of is the harness running to the starter as they both run attached in tandem could there be a short I cant see?. Anyone have a spare?

Anyone have any suggestions?

My gut would say it's in the column, on account of there shouldn't be anything else with a live 12V feed in the same harness, or at least not something that could supply enough current without letting the magic smoke out.

However, I'm wondering if it could be a mechanical issue, with the pinion slipping up the shaft when the solenoid isn't pushing it somehow....
