Why would anyone NOT do this? (If you bring a car)There are a number of reasons, the leading one is that some folks cannot get Friday off to travel to the event. Showing up on Saturday morning at the motel and going over there in the afternoon will probably be too late.

Now if the question you asked was, Why wouldn't anyone WANT to do this? I agree 100%.

Barry

I'm going to throw this out there just for count purposes. I am about 15% on being in on this.

I know its small, but like was mentioned I can't get Friday off, but luckily i'm out of work at 2 p.m.

So...13 hours+ to Detroit. I have no passenger anymore, so there's a chance if i'm feeling it, i'll just drive the whole way through (was originally planning on stopping). That puts me at the Hotel around 3/4 in the morning. If i do it, i'll certainly take a cat nap and get up and go to the Autocross....

Obviously if I stop I wont be there. =(

Does this event require a helmet? My understanding was drags only need them under a certain ET (which even if the car is capable of, i'm not) so i wasn't concerned. But maybe i'll go out and get one anyways...

Sweet, more neons? I was the only 1st gen there last year. You probably wont be able to run the autocross unless you register in the morning and get tech. SCCA is pretty strict on stuff.

It starts about 8am, but folks should get there EARLY, as early as 6:30 or 7:00 am. This is an SCCA regional event with possibly as many as 500-700 cars entered. I strongly doubt that anyone that gets there much after 9 or 10 am will be allowed to enter the event, just because they are expecting so many cars, and will be very busy.

This absolutely stinks.

Probably won't have a sdac feel to it, but i guess for the participants it's better than nothing.

Will they allow all the sdac partipants to run together or are we mixed in with the others?

Is this the proper link and can we register through them so we don't have to get there @ 6:30 am after many of us have long Travel days on Friday.

It certainly will not have an sdac feel to it. But it is the only thing we could arrange. Because of this event, the SCCA was not willing to help us put on an event of our own in the next day or two.

Will they allow all the sdac partipants to run together or are we mixed in with the others? From what they said this week, they will likely establish a separate class for us, but I expect the cars will run in whatever group they are assigned in.

Yes it appears to be the proper link. The guy was unable to quote us any figures earlier this week as the registration info had not been finalized and put on the web yet. But I see it is now.

OKAY EVERYONE - Pay attention here.

The cost for Saturday only will be $40 for SCCA members. If you are not an SCCA member you must purchase a weekend membership for an additional $15. And according to the website registration info, anyone that waits until Saturday morning to register will be charged $70 for the day. And I would bet the $15 will be on top of that.

Do we need to register through that site or can we send money to JT or you or so and so?If you will be there early enough on Friday, they are holding a registration event at the Fairfield Inn that day/evening. The Fairfield Inn is just down the street from the host hotel.

Under no circumstances send money to SDAC (JT & Co) for this event. You must register through the means that the local SCCA region is providing.

One of the options on the reg page is "Event Specific Class." Do we know if there is going to be an "SDAC class" or should we just register for the class that the car qualifies for?

From what the guy told Craig, I'm pretty sure there will be a specific class for our folks/cars. But what it is, I am not certain. OK - registration info.

http://www.motorsportreg.com you'll have to create an account.

Search under Autocross/Solo for the June 23rd & 24th.
Please choose A Modified as your class and we will be able to run together.
When Registering online, you do not need to pay online if you prefer not to. You may pay at the Registration check in on Friday night or Saturday morning before we get started.

I'm still working to get non-SCCA member fees reduced for us. Because of this I recommend paying on site as the fee may change.

Our group will be working a shift on the course so be prepared for this. We will run rain or shine.

Here is a really good quick reference guide. You will need crap ton of air pressure in the tires. I had to run 50psi in my all season khumos to keep them from rolling over. Ill be bring the water sprayer for the new tire/wheel setup too keep them cool and sticky.

Yeah, drive like you stole it. Seriously, as long as there aren't any curbs to worry about, just push the limit of the car. I'm hoping to see how hard I can drive this thing. Been driving the same car for about 20 years, about time I put my experience to the test. :)

I'd say the opposite.
Concentrate and try to hit your turns. Overdriving the car will only slow you down.
Make sure to get there early enough to walk the course before racing begins.
Not sure if we will have the opportunity to work some corners, but if we do, it's a good way to see the good lines around the course.

Denny,

Can't divulge any secrets since this is a competition, lol.

I'm a relative newb also with autocross, but vision and initial braking (getting car to rotate) are high on my list. Car setup is more complicated but nice set of R compound tires would help.

Good advice. Learned that one at SDAC 18 while at Waterford Hills and drove Troy's Horizon too deep into the turn . Tim Pettijohn was my instructor that day and he was wonderful to have on board. I just had to try it....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhsKPJOILHU

Well my point was really to not be afraid to push the limits of the car. You'll find out quickly where it oversteers or understeers if you drive it hard, then you just back off from there.

Driving crappy handling cars is the best way to learn, you can really feel the balance when you accelerate and brake, still won't turn a great time but nails down the fundimentals. There was a Viper group at Englishtown that was autocrossing, the instructor took the drivers around the course in a 15 passenger Dodge van to show them the line. End of the day, the van had the fastest time of the day.

In. I'll be the one taking the turns wide so I don't get orange cone marks on the new paint. just point the nose at the inside and if it looks like you'll hit, press the gas harder... coz there's cones to miss on the outside too.

Where did you find that class????? You can change it to A-modified if you go back and edit the event. I wonder what happens if somebody with a A modified car really does register for their class...are we going to be running a modified formula ford?
It was in the drop down menu, I picked the most un-descript class, once at the event its easy to change, I think they will run us together unless someone is going for points.

Has she autocrossed before? Joy hasn't done anything and would love some tips from a girl I bet.

Only once. Usually Girls have better lines then men, but they are not as aggressive with the throttle or brake.

That's cool. It will be interesting to see everyone and all the cars out there.

I agree. Can't wait! Just got some new wheels/tires and going in for a more aggressive alignment.

Also working on a super secret interior. Gonna have to come to SDAC to see it.

I met with an SCCA organiser this weekend he suggested, if possible, to register on Friday night to make Saturday morning that much easier for everyone. They are expecting about 200 cars of all shapes and sizes. Snell 2000, M2000 or FIA rated
helmets are ok.

Pre-reg is from 7pm to 9pm at Fairfield in on Opdyke road. Tech will be on Saturday am, please have your car ready for tech to speed things up - helmet out, hood popped, numbers on it (they should be assigned at registration), etc.

How late will the event run? I'd still like to come watch a little. I've never been to an autocross.

Just checked the registration list. Looks like we have biggest group by far!

Also just so everyone knows. 2 drivers can drive 1 car. I checked with event organizer.
