I have been out of the loop for a while and want to know what the general consensus is for oil.

I've had good shifting with 4 parts Syncromesh and 1 part BradPenn for protection.

5/20w Moblie 1 Hi mileage daily and drag (all year round)
15/40w road racing summer only ( need to let gear box get up to temp)
endurance racing 20/50w or straight 40w race only ( need to let gear box get up to temp before getting on it)

I usually run 5w20.

Ive always run 10w30 without any problems. Everyone says its too thick though. Hell Sean ran 80w90 in his if I remember right. Idk how the heck the thing even shifted when it was cold.

I just drained gear oil out of a 86 SC. Cold it grinded, sic, in every gear. Put Synchromesh in, fixed.

I just rebuilt my 520 with an obx and used 50/50 of sae 50wt and 10w30. It shifts perfect and no problems at all. Thanks To Glhs60 for the secrect oil and mix ratio.

I run Redline in the Charger (granted, no LSD), and I'll admit it gets a little tough to shift when it's real cold out. But I don't really drive it in the winter, so no big deal. Per another guy's advice on here, I opted for Royal Purple Syncromesh for the Daytona, and it shifts fine in all temperatures.

I guess I will just stick with the royal purple syncro that I was using before. Does anyone know how much the trans holds? I can't remember if it was two or three bottles.

I have some if you need it. $30 for three quarts shipped to your door.

I was informed sometime in the past, that the gear oil weights are different to motor oil weights, and not directly comparable... back in the day in the uk, 50W70 or something like that gear oil was common... though personally, I had gearbox in sump cars that shared the engine oil.

Oh, this is worth a read... BEFORE you stick some "gear oil" in it...

note the EP stuff is not compatible with brass/copper and synchros!

Hmm thats interesting. I didnt know that. Ill have to read up on that. But surely 80w90 is going to be thicker than 5w30

The smell alone is enough reason not to use gear oil...

I would just use MTL or stick with a 5w30 for most of us. Or 5w20 is a decent choice if you live in the great white north. 5w20 is still thicker than Dexron which the factory originally filled them with before they changed it to motor oil to avoid bearing wear.

Amsoil makes a GL-4 gear lube in the 75w90 range if you want an EP but still yellow metal safe oil. Our beetle uses it and even when its dead of winter cold theres no shifting issues.

I always run 5w30 conventional oil and never had a problem. I had a trans installed years ago in my 84 voyager before I got involved in these cars and the installer put gear oil in. It was hard to shift in the winter and ended up starving the bearings of oil. In my opinion never put gear oil in it. The last 555 trans I rebuilt spent years at the local drag strip in a low 12 second SC. It ran 5w30 conventional oil and everything looked great in the trans. The reason why I pulled it apart was because the spiders broke. Turned out prior to it being used for racing it spit the differential pin through the end cover ( found a welded plate covering the hole) and someone installed a non 555 / 568 differential.

Dang! Only local place that carries it here is Napa, and it's over $15 a quart!

Scott, I put Amsoil MTL in my SRT-4, shifts better now.(car has only 22,000 miles on it)
Didn't even add the friction modifier for the LSD.

Would it be harmful to run the 5w-20 HPS royal purple in a A-555? I was wondering if zinc/ phosphorous content would be harmful? Any input?

I'll be using Mobil-1, High Mileage, but what weight? 5-20 or 10-30?

I ended up just using regular 5w30 motor oil/

I'll be using Mobil-1, High Mileage, but what weight? 5-20 or 10-30?Is there actually a choice of 5-20 in High mileage oil? Might be new out as those originally specced for 5-20 cars hit a hundred thousand miles plus, but not seen it before.

I have used mobil-1 high mileage in a motor though (Can't remember whether it was 5-30 or 10-30) ... and for that I'd say ... RUN AWAY!!!... it made it loud and it made it leaky, and I short changed it after a thousand or so miles.

---------- Post added at 12:55 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:53 PM ----------

oh ya, that's a point, if they're making a HM oil for the cars that wanted 5W20 from the factory... well those ones were also the ones to want SL or SM oil with the super low zinc content... so dunno if that's much of a recommendation for it being better than anything else for a trans.

Yeah, I tried 10w-30 in my Norton and the thing wet sumped and smoked on start up - too thin; bad idea, had to dump it. The bike's OEM spec was 20w-50 or straight 50w.

RoadWarrior222
06-12-2012, 04:14 PM
Yeah, and that's probably thought up for the UK not Cali, so I'd figure you'd want straight 50 all year, unless you had it rebuilt tighter... but anything to catch those pesky smug blighters with their Black Shadows, eh? ...

True dat; thinner she runs a bit stronger, by seat of the pants.

Speaking of Vincents, a couple months ago I pulled into the Rock Store and as I'm taking off my helmet someone makes a crack about my worn out rear tire - Jay Leno - he then went on to compliment my Commando. He was there on his Egli Vincent; I had to apologize for drooling over it as I quizzed him about it. Gracious man and a true benefactor of things mechanical.
