How exactly is this done? Seems the tighter I pull them together the lower the gauge reads(obviously, right?). Seems like I might be missing something obvious here and I'm just feeling my Polish.

You don't pull the cams together, loosen rockers, install gauge, set tension.

You don't use this method Simon?? I am surprised.

I know Jackson uses it with success but I personally feel you are introducing another variable into the equation.

Nope, I've never heard about this until recently, I personally feel its a false way to check tension, if you were supposed to do that, then you'd set all the other belts the same way, which you don't.

It's faster though.....

How do you figure?

I was messing with you because you are admittedly lazy. It is faster because you do not have to remove the valve covers or rocker bolts.

LOL, I am lazy but I still get the tension right, :eyebrows:

So my intuition is right that using the wrenches is actually copmpletely bogus? I mean , the hard you pull the lower the gauge is going to read correct?

Its not bogus, it can be done but because everyone has a different amount of strength, it will be never be the same. Best just to release the valve train and do it properly.
