View Full Version : Old purple plate from TU, or...?

I have a pressure plate that is purple in color (under the grease lol) and was stiff as hell to push. Were the early Purple Plates from TU pretty stiff, or were there other manufacturers that sold purple pressure plates? No idea how old this one is, no sticker on it, has 400- written on it w/ a yellow paint marker. Forgot to take a pic, can do that tomorrow. It looks like the TU clutch, but of course the site says it has a stock pedal feel w/ his latest design. This one was definitely not a stock pedal feel, although I wouldn't say it was too stiff for a daily. You wouldn't want to hold it in for long periods of time though, like city driving.

Is it a dual diaphragm like this?

As far as I know all purple plates from TU are single diaphram. I bought one pretty early on and some of the locals around here had it before I did and they all have a lighter than stock pedal.

So you are saying that none of the purple plates from TU have a stiff pedal? Which means this is still a mystery plate lol.

AFIK when his purple plate came out he was already changing the fulcrum point which gives it a rather light pedal feel. The "350 ft/lb" Exedy clutch I just put in my hydraulic WRX feels like a rock compared to the TU purple that has held much beyond 500.

I'm pretty sure I have the prototype TU purple plate and 4 puck combo. Maybe Chris can confirm this, but I never felt like this was a leg press clutch at all. I would have to agree it retained a stock feel, though it's been a loooong time sinse I had a stock clutch in that car.

Same here. Purple plate, stock (or even lighter) pedal feel.

I'm daily driving a VNT Shadow now that has a recent stock clutch in it and it's probably a bit heavier than the purple plate in my race Shadow.

Hmmm, wonder what this one is then. Need to get a pic, didn't have my phone with me today when I was out there.

The plate is also a little different than most plates for our cars. It is modified from a different application for our cars.

Could it be a spec clutch? They have a purple plate too.

I think that is because the TU purple plate starts life as a Valeo plate and not a Sachs like the Yellow and Blue or the stock TIII and most turbo plates....

I talked to his clutch guy about it and he told me it was from a BMW or something else and modified to fit our cars. It is amazing that that clutch has so much holding strength yet a lighter than stock pedal.

This one does have Valeo on it.

I seem to remember seeing different style PP's when I ordered the from Chrysler years ago. Thought nI order one for a 90 VNT once and notice a lager 232mm disc and different style plate?

Here's what I got, dug it up the other day, knew I remembered it but not sure if this was ordered for 90 VNT or maybe 93-94 Turbo or even non turbo app?

Anyway, look familiar? :eyebrows:

That is a dual diaphram plate, which explains why it is stiff as hell. The TU units are single diaphram.

Wonder if it's an RPS unit or something?
