View Full Version : WG actuated throttle body work as a cheap exhaust cutout?

I've heard the electric cutouts are fail prone. And its out of my budget anyway. What do you think of using an old hammered throttle body and a wastegate can for a cutout.. would it melt?

I thought there was a thread on this exact subject once... it could work. not sure if it would be any more durable

I've learned first hand that a throttle body will not hold up very long to high heat... lol

The name brand cut-outs are reliable and not that expensive. You can surf Ebay and if you are patient, can get one for $100. I got a QTP oval 3.5" kit for $100. I think its "badlandz" on Ebay has kits for around $200. Considering the time and effort to make one, $200 is a good deal.

Personal experience with a bassani (??) unit says they leak when they're supposed to be closed. I heard Doug's headers made a sliding plate design in their own brand of cut outs and they're supposed to never leak.

Doug's are a great design but bloody expensive. Mine leaks a tad closed but nothing noticeable.

Shame they don't make brass or copper floats for toilet tanks any more, coulda maybe made a globe valve with one.

Sport bikes come with servo operated valves to control the exhaust flow. Stock setups can be picked up cheap when they get swapped off for simpler race pipes.

True, good idea if the size is right.

I've had mine since I made that thread how ever many years ago. Still no leaking. Gonna add in a MBC though so I can adjust when it opens. Right now it opens at 4.5 PSI (I took the stock TB spring and unwound it one turn) so if I drive up any kinda hill at all it opens. Gonna set it around 10 PSI for a more highway friendly quiet. That way it only opens when the game face is on. :thumb:

For a few bucks more from these guy's, you get the whole kit and kaboodle-

This works good but if you really drive your car hard the motors vibrate loose and fall off I went through 2 of them on my old srt4....I end up just using a block off plate and taking it off when racing.

I've heard that same complaint from several people. You would think it'd b easy to isolate teh motor from vibes... mebbe with a soft coupler between the motor shaft and plate shaft.

I had a electronic motor one. They suck.

1. The one I had takes 6-7 seconds to fully open.
2. It leaked.
3. Bolts backed themselves out, even if you use thread lock.
4. The one I had have no indicated to let you know if it is fully open or fully closed.
5. Opening and closing the steel plate over a period of time will actually cut into the aluminum housing, which will cause it to leak even more.

I'd rather have W.P._Turbocars's one.

Has anybody had good luck with one of the cast iron dumps with the mechanical cable? Those seem like they would be more reliable than the electric ones.

I'm trying to decide if I want to spend on a full 3" exhaust or go dump.. I like the idea of being able to go stealth but its got to be solid. Can't be getting stuck open when the baby is nappin.
