View Full Version : proper way to set timing

Is there a proper way to set timing? The cal i started from seemed to add RPM and MAP timing to work with the G head. But others seem to use the RPM timing for finding max timing for all the RPM range at a low boost setting, then use the MAP timing to pull timing as boost increases.

What way is the best? I am trying to tune a g head, and I know it needs more timing I just want to know the best way to do it.

First thing you should buy is get yourself one of this so you can monitor knocks.

I add timing at the vacuum part of AdvanceFromMapWarmPart, and pull timing on AdvanceFromMapWarmPart and AdvanceFromMapWarmFull if I see knocks.

thanks, I have one of those and i also have my cal set up to flash the CEL when it reads knock. I know it can take more timing, i just want to know the best way to do it for driveability and such. Add it to the RPM table or the MAP tables or Split it between both??

Have you taken a look at Rob's T-SMEC_25_ATX_CUST_G 18.1 cal? I have a 2.2 common block with a ported and cc'd g-head. I took that cal and made changes using MPTune, added some more timing on both MAP and RPM2 tables. Since I'm running E85, I used MAP and RPM timing from one of moparzrule's cals to create a modification. It's a burn, try and tweak process. Hope this helps.

Thanks I have tried it but it knocked likead, but that was a long time ago, maybe i should give it a go again and try to start with that.

You adjust the part and full throttle spark tables, that's all folks. :p

That Makes sense in most cases, but I have a G-head, and the T-SMEC ghead, and the others have both the RPM and the MAP timing bumped up, So I am just trying to see if there is a method to splitting up where I add the timing? Maybe not,

Rob might chime in but that's all I've been told to mess with, my G head cal from Rob only had those tables tweaked.
