Im pretty sure everyones heard of this topic before but oh well. My daytona is in need of new suspension....all of it. I want to do coil overs on the front and just kyb gr'2's in the rear. Has anyone adapted a cheapie EBAY coil over kit onto a stock set of struts. Say like the gabriel heavy duty units? I dont want to shell out the cash for a set of konis only to cut them up to shreds. Thanks

most likely not road race maybe just to the strip once or twice a year and around town driving

Coil overs might be overkill and just make it ride like crap then.

OneLapChamp Mike Stimac told me years ago that for street use the Koni's aer great but not even needed. I have a set of the KYB's on the front of the Z and they work good.

I have the GR2's in the front of my car, and they seem fine for spirtited street driving.

i think a good set of struts might be the way for me to go

KYB GR2 struts are really not very good. You would be better off buying the konis and keeping your stock springs.

konies are $$$ though

Stiffer springs add stiffness, dampers (shocks/struts) change the timing of the reaction... so really you need both for best performance.

The '87 CSX's came with the Monroe GP struts/shocks which are good but I havn't seen them available.

Koni's are big bucks but they do come with a lifetime warranty.

Depends on what you are doing with the car. For a driver and street car that wont see an AutoX or road course, Koni's are nice but not needed.

The red konis are still really just normal stock replacement struts. KYB GR2s, Monroe Sensatracs, etc are just cheap replacements, but the bilstien front struts and gas adjust rear shocks are supposed to be decent. For a serious autocross car with springs other than stock, there really arent any readily availailable struts that are valved stiff enough.

+1 to Bilstien... most under-rated brand out there.

Bilstien factory is only 15 miles from me. May pay them a visit. When I worked at an offroad race shop, Bilstien and Fox were the top shocks.

DO NOT BUY the Ebay coilovers, they are absolute garbage, made of very cheap and thin materials and I wouldn't put them on my enemy's car. I have seen them up close and its scary.

I have some Bilstein coil overs that I will be installing soon with Eibach springs.

Bilstein as mentioned, Gabriel VST's are good, as are Sensa-Trac if you don't lower the car.

thanks for the advice simon...
i'd probably just like to lower the COG about 1" or slightly more.

basically i need to do some research, because next year suspension and brakes are goal #1

Sensa-Tracs SUCK!!! I HATE those damn things! The jounce is WAY too harsh and there's not enough rebound controlIMHO. It made my Daytona ride and handle like garbage! WAY too overpriced also. I'd go with Bilsteins though...that's a good product!

From experience the GR2's don't have enough rebound control for stiffer springs, they tend to bouncy a little, but the ride is decent. I also experienced a problem with them raising the ride height of the front of the car. I am using 1989 Daytona Shelby springs in a 1989 LeBaron with GR2's and all new KYB hardware...I had to use srping clamps to get the car to the height it was supposed to be!
