5th gear synchronizer modifications

I noticed the 520/555 5th gear synchronizer outer slider ring has the pointy dog teeth cut on both sides of the part. So after you destroy the first side it can be flipped around and a fresh set of teeth is there. Wondering if it could be mounted on a lathe and the groove where the fork & pads be opened up to accept the wider fork & pads on the 568/523/543 ? Wondering if anyone else has ever noticed this and thought of doing the same thing ?

Interesting concept there... I've never abused 5th bad enough to see substantial pad wear tho

That would work for "fresh teeth" its just too bad the 90+ 5th gear sliders cannot be flipped around.....

Thats what I mean, make the groove wider so we can use it on the later transmissions. Just holding a junk 523 slider to a 520 slider it looks like theres enough metal there to do it.

LOL, this reminds me of the A555 that used to be in the Z... had a 520 5th gear in it. Guess whoever rebuilt it last did that

I myself have done that many times lol 555 with 520 5th gears and 568s with 523 5th gears.......

can the same thing be done with the 3rd gear in a 568? swap it out for something similar?

3rd from a 555 can be used in it. It only works for 5th because its not formed as a solid part of the input shaft like 1-4 are.

You can flip the 1-2 around in them as well. Usually the 1st side has nice teeth and the 2nd is used up more....
