first thought: HEP or distributor.

was this happening before the new plugs and wires?

hep is new. did it before the plugs.

check the shutter in the distributor, it can become loose and cause problems like this (the plastic "rivets" crack).

how's the cap and rotor?

my lancer was having similar problems before i bought it, the previous owner replaced the throttle body (along with the attached sensors) and it hasn't had a problem since. you might want to check the TPS, AIS motor and wiring.

one last thought: what about a fuel delivery problem?

have you read the spark plugs yet? i have had this problem a few times, both times it was fuel related. once the fpr was stuck and the other time the injectors were bad

I have an 85 charger. It was doing the same thing, sputtering at idle, lagging under acceleration. Then, one day, it shut down when I was one mile from home. The problem was a fuel pump. Check the fuel filter as well. Your pump might leave you stranded like mine did.
