Wow...its been awhile since I have had any chance to look at my race car build...but hopefully armed with my recent tax refund this project can get back on the road.

I have designated my R/T as my daily driver for now, but am also interested in seeing it go to a good home. Let me know if any might be interested.

I still have all the parts outlined in my old thread --> Old Spirit R/T build thread (http://www.turbo-mopar.com/forums/showthread.php?35628-3.0L-Turbo-Budget-Build) <-- and am going to use them all in this build. There is some info about my new project in the last page(s) of that thread but it hasn't been updated in almost a year.

So here goes...

I'm looking to build a dedicated race car that will be street registered / somewhat legal for some extra fun. EDIT: Oh and i want to keep it over 11.49 so i don't need to worry about a cage and more NHRA rules...

It is going to be a stripped out chassis (sub-2000lb) with 2 bucket seats just in-case i need some help tuning.

So far i have all the turbo parts sourced and sitting here, the motor is sitting on a stand complete and ready to go, and the chassis is almost ready to go.

The trans is a different story...it is currently in pieces as i completely failed at rebuilding it the first time around. :banghead: Another kit has since been ordered as well as a Peloquin to finish it off. I simply decided that i didn't want to go through all the hassle to make an OBX work.

Current timeline has me trying to have it ready for SDAC22 so there will be some competition for the T3.0L crowd <-- maybe that's the wrong word to use...

My hopes for this project and thread are to be able to actually finish them in a somewhat timely manner, but that will all depend on my ever changing financial situation. :o

what are you running with as far as the motor being built? stock or something special? what head work? etc im curious.

Engine is stock with lots of new parts. Mods for now include my Crower regrind cams with RPW adjustable cam gears, 6610 valve springs, ported upper plenum with 52mm TB and spacers to slow down heatsoak. Plus MSII/Extra.

And the Chassis is?

Its going to be something unique, something that i don't think has been done before...but i really want to keep it quiet for now. :eyebrows:

heat soak of the plenum is non excistent for me until i let the car sit still turned off. (due to my spacers :) )

the chassis better be an omni!

Well, he said something that hasnt been done before, so that rules out the omni, all the cars the 3.0 came in, the 1st gen daytona, the neon, the aries/reliant, and probably some other FWD dodge swaps that i cant think of off-hand.

Just because he said unique/something that maybe hasn't been done doesn't mean that it can't be a factory 3.0 car. I took it as to mean a body style that hasn't had a "built" 3.0 done before like a lebaron or something along those lines.

That's possible, but he did say something about 2000 lbs or something like that. The lightest factory v6 car is 700+lbs away..

Just wanted to give a quick update as I haven't been online much lately.

Been working on replacing/upgrading suspension bushings + motor/trans mounts recently, sourced new front hubs/bearings and other front end parts. Transmission is still in pieces as i haven't had the initiative to tear into it again.

Did a bunch of de-riceing to the chassis also. I.E. PO put carbon fiber wrap on EVERYTHING he could get his hands on, lights were all painted up, stickers everywhere, etc.

Unfortunately I just got kicked back to part time at my job, so toy funds are going to be limited again...I hate having to work on such a tight budget, but bills and school loans take precedence.

nmw2006
09-04-2012, 08:05 PM
LOL you guys crack me up...the real reason I haven't said anything up to this point is that I was researching the feasibility of using different platforms and stock parts such as motor mounts, etc.

I have had chances to buy many different cars and/or rolling chassis, and I didn't want to say anything while I was still making up my mind.

I have looked at some Eagle vehicles, a couple small Mitsus, a Colt, an Omni, many different actual 3.0L cars, and even a Geo metro..:o

Anyhow, I have decided to go with my original plan and have been slowly building the chassis as per previous few posts.

Car is a rust-free, red, 1995 Plymouth Neon ACR. Front hubs have been converted to Shadow parts and bigger brake setup to make things easier. Complete poly suspension bushing kit is in the process of being installed. Interior is stripped out with plans for a custom dash and seats and possibly a cage. Looking into one of RBryants coilover setups as I want to use this for autocross and road racing. (And maybe some drag passes to show up the local ricer crowd)

Car is currently in storage unit due to no place to store it at my place, so I can't do any major (engine) work on it in accordance with rules. I NEED to find a trailer to put it on/in so I can ditch the $150/month storage unit. That way I can keep it at my place and actually work on it. I will trade my Spirit for a decent trailer if anyone knows of one.

Will try to get some pictures of it soon but its kind of buried at the moment plus I don't want to move it very far for fear of destroying the new front bearings...no axles in it. I have a set of 4 wheel dollies that I need to put together and get it up on so it is easier to move..right now that consists of using a floor jack under the front end. :yuck:

Hope this makes some of you guys a little happier, but unfortunately I don't anticipate it running in the near future. I just don't have the room or funds to get it running when I have 2 running cars for transportation and it is quite simply put a project. So I will continue to do little bits and pieces as i have money and time.

I need to find a manual steering rack for my baby. Any clues? They are unobtanium from the dealer, parts stores, internet without a core or $200+.

I may just end up looping the rack in my ACR to keep the 16:1 quick steering.

It's been a while, but Neon guys use P-body racks. I remember reading that the P-body rack can be had in a 14:1 ratio. Look around neons.org I know the info is over there.

i run a stock PS rack without PS and its fine. im sure youl be fine also.

If you search the junk yards, you can find a manual rack in a neon as some of them came from the factory with one.

Well I've got the piston lip seals (I tore these up last time by not using lube and/or correct install methods), sealing rings, and orings done, all steels and clutches replaced, waiting on a tool and the springs/rollers to replace the over-running clutch sprags as the old springs were broken/missing. Going to be reusing the kickdown and low/reverse bands as they are in spec and look fine. Replaced the low/reverse band strut with a beefier aftermarket one so no more pretzels for me. Debating whether to replace the thrust washers as a few "look worn" but are within thickness specs.

Got the case and covers cleaned up good, going to work on getting my Peloquin LSD ready next. It needs bearings pressed on, and the races in the extension housing and bearing support plate replaced. Then to set up the preload via shims.

nmw2006
09-09-2012, 09:33 PM
Got the Peloquin set up tonight. Ring gear is attached and torqued...had to heat it up a little because it didn't want to fit then quick grab my impact and hit the bolts. Both bearings pressed on easy via my 20ton press.

Something isn't right though..when i put it in the case something doesn't line up right. I think i pressed the big ring gear side bearing on too far. Gonna have to find my puller and test that theory.

Just waiting on a couple parts and special tools and this thing should go back together soon.

RoadWarrior222
09-10-2012, 08:45 AM
Not quite seeing what you've mixed and matched, but you do know that the bearing cups in the ext housing and whatever it's called on the drivers side needed to be shimmed to fit when diff is changed or bearings replaced etc right?

Mostly you'd notice slop or tightness though, unless you had a diff from a vehicle that was core shifted to one extreme and put it in one that was core shifted to the other, and they had like 200 thou of shim on opposite sides.

Orrr. haven't you got to that bit yet?

Personally i'd just cut my own shims from dimensionally even sheet material rather than faff around trying to find certain sizes remaining in stock at scattered dealers... but that seems to worry people... maybe because I say I'd just stack as many rings of coke can as I'd need.... :D

Thanks for the pics and finally telling us what your using, :thumb:\

Someone on Neons.org put a 3.3 in one, and I think someone did a 3.0L already so that's cool, another one.

Do yourself a favour and get some old CV shafts, remove the shafts and put the ends in the bearings and tighten up, even not moving it, the bearings are being side loaded and you will ruin them just having it sit like you are now.

RoadWarrior222

nmw2006
09-11-2012, 10:58 AM
Yes I understand how this trans works/goes together.

As far as the diff goes, it has about 1/2" play when installed, that's where i got the bearing being pressed too far on idea from.

The bearings in it right now are toast (literally, pass side fell apart while i was towing it :yuck:) so I don't care about them. Once the new ones go in it will definitely get axles.

nmw2006

You did, I just haven't actually put them on yet because I realized it would be sitting for awhile + the reason you pointed out earlier.

nmw2006
09-17-2012, 05:24 PM
Well trans is complete minus differential, hopefully I did everything right and it works when I get it in the car. :amen: Finally got the tools I needed to pull and replace the bearings. Now just need to find time to put the diff together, and install the valve body and pan. I'm reading about blocking the accumulator and think I'm gonna try that too. Should make it shift harder (I want BANG) and not eat clutches so fast (from sliiiiiding into the next gear). Also governor is disabled via the RMVB.
