View Full Version : IC'ing a P-body cheapest vs. easiest

A friend just bought a '91 Sundance 2.5T. Of course, he wants to modify it. I've told him I won't help until he gets the proper gauges and can show me the cash.

I've haven't done much with a P-body, so I'll ask here:

1.) Easiest way to IC - I would assume that I'd just pick up the stock IC pieces (like from a G-body) and drop them in. Will the G-body IC/Rad bolt into the P-body? With the hoses fit or will they be too long? Or would I be stuck searching for CSX parts?

2.) Cheapest - pick up an IC (which would be the easiest fit in front of the radiator?) - and custom pipe it.

i say #2 unless you get the whole thing rad and cooler / you just can,t slide it over like a lot of them / front mt. works just cut out holes for the pipe remove the air bag sensor they just add weight .lol ALAN

I intercooled my old '89 Shadow ES with a rad/IC from a Shelby Lancer (same as G-body unit). I also used the SL's radiator hoses, radiator fan, airbox/hoses, and intercooler hoses.

The only thing I had to do to get it to fit was modify the upper radiator mounts. The SL rad/ic was a little taller than the Shadow's original radiator. The filler neck made hood clearance pretty tight but it was never really a problem.

My t2 rad/cooler came from a masi or so I was told. Had alot of people tell me they were too tall. I installed it turned my rubber bumpers up the whole way and just never slam the hood. No problems for a year. I got a lower rad hose from NAPA they are still avail. Just told them it was 89 shelby tona, went right in, upper is the same stock hose. For the lower intercooler hose use one from a Daytona, they are still available from the dealer. For the upper it is pretty much a straight in shot so use truck rad hose and I *think* 2.5" exhaust pipe, if not its 2.25". Just get whatever BOV make a flange and put it on the upper exh pipe.

Here is an article I wrote a long time ago about installing a Conquest intercooler on a P-body (Shelby CSX-T).

With your friends car being a 91 the intercooler/radiator from a Spirit R/T or Daytona IROC R/T would be a direct bolt in.

The core support on the 91 and up cars is different from the previous years so even a CSX radiator/intrecooler wouldn't be a bolt in.

The Daytona setup is a lot easier to find than the others and should work fine with a little fabrication as far as upper mounts go.

If he plans on keeping A/C and running a daytona setup there will also need to be brackets made to mount the A/C condensor. On the 91 up cars the A/C condensor piggybacks onto the radiator.

With the daytona setup he will also need to get a new overflow bottle and find a place to mount it.

I have a nice 2 core IC for sale in the forsale section. I was going to use it in my Shadow but went with an Air to Water instead. Its tight but its fits just fine.

I packed a Cummins intercooler in my brother's Shadow 6 years ago and documented it: http://www.moparhead.50megs.com/intercooler.htm

It's not hard to do, and the Cummins coolers aren't very expensive anymore.
