Scatter Shield - Reeves Racing/Creative Fabrication

Here is the group buy on these scatter shields. This scatter shield is built per NHRA rules and it is mandatory per NHRA rules that you have it if you run faster than 11.50 (!)

This scatter shield is the same I run on my OMNI. It has been tested to fit the 2.2L/2.5L engine family and A-520/A-555 and A-523/A-568.
In it's current configuration, it WILL NOT fit a A-413. One mounting tab would need to be moved. You may also want a wider unit for an auto?
It has not been physically tested to fit the T3 crank sensor, but from measurement testing, it should clear just fine.
It has not been physically tested on a T3 STOCK intake and throttle body configuration, and there looks to be SOME CLEARANCE ISSUES. The throttle body may need to be flipped over or otherwise modified.

This scatter shield includes a timing window cover. (2) bolts will need to be removed to take the cover off so you can see your stock trans timing window.

The scatter shield will come to you unpainted. That way you can choose what color you want and if you want to paint it or get it powdercoated (or leave it bare and oily like mine is).

Price will be $150 shipped (shipping limited up to $20....more than that and you'll pay the difference).
Hardware option will be an additional $20 and include all hardware necessary to install.

Payment in full is expected if you want one. Cut-off date for the first group of scatter shields to be made is February 1st, 2012. After that, they may or may not be available, and the price will most likely go up, as we are only buying enough material for the group buy posted here.

I just checked the rule book and it does not specify whether it can be painted or not, so I think paint or powder is OK.

ALSO, under General Regulations, it specifies "with clutch" so AFAIK not required for Auto unless thats under "class rules" or you just want one for safety

How many people are seriously interested in purchasing one for an auto (A-413)? The majority of this design fits an auto, but a minor mod would need to be made, making 2 seperate builds.....basically the current new design fits A520/A555/A523/A568 and a new style would need to be for A413. If there is enough interest, I will do it....

How likely is a flex plate/torque converter to take out your nads compared to a flywheel/pressure plate?

It just seems like less of a need on an slushbox but I guess I could be mistaken.

Yep... That and the input shaft has to break off completely for the TC to come loose... then it has more surface area to not slice thru the bellhousing like a thin flywheel.

The flex plate itself would have a lot less energy to give off I would think.

You guys have a good point. Maybe all I need is an SFI flexplate. If I am the only one interested in the 31TH version, then imma back out. The development for a low demand item would certainly be a loss.

Overkill can't hurt in some cases if he is willing to make it big power guys should consider it. I didn't in any way want to discourage people from extra safety equipment.

Worse yet I didn't mean to drive people away from a product. I wasn't thinking about that when I posted... <oops>. :(

2011 NHRA Rulebook General Regs

2:14 TRANSMISSION, Automatic/NHRA-Accepted
All cars running 10.99 (*6.99) seconds and quicker must have an
NHRA-accepted locking-type dipstick on the transmission.
Any non-OEM automatic floor-mounted automatic transmission
shifter must be equipped with a spring-loaded positive reverse
lockout device to prevent the shifter from accidentally being put into
reverse gear. Functional neutral safety switch mandatory. All
transmission lines must be metallic or high-pressure-type hose. All
vehicles running quicker than 10.99 seconds (*6.99) or faster than
135 mph (except some Stock and Super Stock classes as noted
under Class Requirements) and using an automatic transmission
must be equipped with a transmission shield meeting SFI Spec 4.1
and labeled accordingly. (“Blanket”-type shield, appropriately
labeled as meeting SFI Spec 4.1, permitted.) All non-blanket-type
shields must incorporate two (or one, per manufacturer’s
instructions) 3/4 x 1/8-inch straps that bolt to the shield on each
side and pass under the transmission pan, or transmission pan
must be labeled as meeting SFI Spec 4.1. Permitted in all classes
where an automatic transmission is used.


Comp, Super Comp, Super Gas, 9.99 or quicker E.T. cars, and 135-
mph or faster E.T. cars using an automatic transmission, Lenco
Drive, or BRT must be equipped with a flexplate meeting SFI Spec
29.1 and covered by a flexplate shield meeting SFI Spec 30.1.
Transmission that can utilize a high-gear transbrake must be
supported by the use of two momentary buttons (one to arm the
system, second as the main transbrake). Air shifter bottles must be
stamped with DOT-1800 pound rating (minimum) and be securely
mounted (i.e., no tie wraps or hose clamps).

Thanks for digging up the rule Mike. Did you find any rules on construction, like the MTX rules where it said "if not commercially available make it this thick and that wide?" I'm guessing it has to be wider than the MTX one so it can collect up the whole TC? Sounds like a different part for sure... Maybe one of the quick auto guys already has a A413 design that they would be willing to do a group buy on?

I would think on an auto you would want the shield to also go over the front planetary. I know just about nothing about the autos on these cars but on the 727 it is the front drum (IIRC) that comes apart in certain circumstances and causes a bad day. That failure mode may not even be possible here because it has something to do with the sprag failing and causing the drum to spin at a much higher speed than designed and throwing itself apart. I think they have worked to decrease this issue over the years.

Here is the group buy on these scatter shields. This scatter shield is built per NHRA rules and it is mandatory per NHRA rules that you have it if you run faster than 11.50 (!)

This scatter shield is the same I run on my OMNI. It has been tested to fit the 2.2L/2.5L engine family and A-520/A-555 and A-523/A-568.
In it's current configuration, it WILL NOT fit a A-413. One mounting tab would need to be moved. You may also want a wider unit for an auto?
It has not been physically tested to fit the T3 crank sensor, but from measurement testing, it should clear just fine.
It has not been physically tested on a T3 STOCK intake and throttle body configuration, and there looks to be SOME CLEARANCE ISSUES. The throttle body may need to be flipped over or otherwise modified.

This scatter shield includes a timing window cover. (2) bolts will need to be removed to take the cover off so you can see your stock trans timing window.

The scatter shield will come to you unpainted. That way you can choose what color you want and if you want to paint it or get it powdercoated (or leave it bare and oily like mine is).

I literally had to hand file that front pad on tranny taking about .005-.010 off of it and the blanket fits like a glove. Took about 30 seconds to file. Couldn't have been designed to fit better. Totally impressed here James! I was expecting to have to tweak it here or there, but this is near perfect right out of the box.

Hey guys sorry for the long time of no response. I got a 3.5 year old to try to keep up with!! LOL.

I had my template laying at my place of work and was drawing it in SolidEdge as I had time to try to make the next batch go much easier. The thought was to get a few quotes off the drawings and have all the pieces laser cut or water jetted out. Thought it would cost more, but be way easier on me in the long run instead of doing all that myself.

Since then, my company has moved. I ended up taking the template back to my home shop. After SDAC, I will promise to get this thing drawn up. It's been taking way, way too long....I know.

You should have 4 bolts in the shield, and also included was a plastic bag with 4 bolts, 2 nuts and 2 washers.

just checked in to say I did receive my shield, and yes I'm part of the USPS destroyed the box too but everything important was accounted for. As for fitment onto the 568, minor touch ups were done like rounding off corners but where it got notched for fitment to the upper diff area, it was 1/4" to long so I had to trim it. Also for those with a 568 with a huge front boss you will have to trim off a 1/4" off that boss so the shield clears and sits flat to the mounting points. I would suggest anyone that is going to powder coat or paint their part, to test fit it first, in case you need to trim or round off some edges, unlike my dumb --- that didn't do that cause I was tired and it was really late last nite but i'm making the push to get my car back out this year. All in all James thank you for the time you took to do this group buy, my plate is so full and I have too much to do, that having this already done for me is HUGE , thanks man !!
