We finally got the 1.22 gears in the $50 Black Shadow and ran it at TurboPalooza Saturday..

We've been running the car for 5 years or so, The car usually runs about 14.00 at about 94ish MPH.

Best ever was a 13.89 / 96ish MPH..

First day out with the 1.22's:

13.68, 13.61 at almost 99MPH....

Nathan said it was spinning about 5000RPM through the traps, about a 500RPM increase.

60ft times were at 2.00, about normal for the car - SO: the time was picked up down track from the shorter gearing.

Me likes, more to come....

Very interesting. Stock engine?

IIRC this is an 88 2.2/auto sedan with a 1pc and a mitsu... Although if it was still a mitsu id be surprised cuz of those 99 traps.

Very cool.

Hang on to your old transfer gears tho. As you build up with more power, you will need to put taller gears back in.
When the car is trapping 110mph, the tach will be over 6100.

Why? I trap 99 with a Mitsu...

Or go to taller tires...

Yeah and i figure your car is a little more optimized than most mitsu cars since it's a dedicated drag car. That's why.. i could be wrong. One of my local friends ran into the 13s with a 2.5/t1/auto mitsu daytona too, but i know that's rare, and 2.2 probably doesnt make it any easier on this shadow.

If its a stock, Mitsu car, thats impressive, means even a stock 2.2 likes to rev.

With a mitsu, I don't think the 2.2/2.5 makes much difference honestly. The mitsu can only make -at best- ~240hp at the crank. It simply doesn't flow enough air to make more.

Mine could be a little bit more optimized for drag duty, true. But mitsu cars LOVE cold air. I've only run 99mph in 50-60 deg air. You'd never see a mitsu car run 99 in July, for example...

5000 rpm isnt abnormal for a mitsu car.. thats about where it ends, but i think i shift/shifted my mitsu cars at 5000-5200 or so normally.

Yeah but a mitsu 2.5 can make 350 lb ft vs 250 for the 2.2. That's got to have some affect on the ET potential, i would think..

It's a 88 2.2 with a TII Garrett, 2.5" downpipe w/cut out, Ebay IC, TII injectors, G valve set to 18/20psi.

23" M&H slicks, FMVB, some smoothing on the exhaust manifold. Home made AFPR. manual steering rack, lawn tractor battery.

As I said, 60ft's were average that day, the gearing was the difference, it picked up about .4 over what it usually runs.....

How much boost is he building on the line? How much boost can he launch with without spinning the slicks?

I typically build around 5psi. I think anymore then that and I would start spinning bad, and the brakes have a hard time holding.

UPDATE 11/13/11:

Nathan was kind enough to let me "borrow" the Shadow and take it to T & T on Saturday. :hail:

Again, consistent 13.60's / 13.70's AND a new best MPH at 99.05. :thumb:

We need to bleed the brakes, as it does like to creep on the line when brake boosting it, I wasn't able to launch as hard as I would have liked.

BUT: I went door to door with a Nissan 350Z and *drove around* a 4.6 Mustang GT...

SO - After 2 weeks of testing, the 1.22 gears are good for about .4 and even 3/4MPH on top..

If you have time to do this...

When you stage, put it in neutral, rev it up to high rpm (5000 or more), and then cram the brakes when the engine is reving down. The engine will make ~25" vac on decel from high rpm whereas at idle you might only get ~18". Might give you the little bit you need to not creep through the brakes.

That's actually a damn good idea.

We do that already, great minds think alike....

What I think it needs is a good bleeding and the rear drums adjusted up tighter.

Or a line lock.

This or a trans brake, :eyebrows:
