I have to change the WG can on my turbo. Is it necessary to remove the head again to do this? :banghead:

No, You do not have to pull the head. Just remove air box and hoses, then remove the two bolts on the wastegate bracket and the small clip on the wasegate rod, if it is there.

Thanks for the help! I guess the fire cooked the diaphram in the can. I have no boost control whatsoever: straight to max possible boost. It's a little scary!

Hmmm. Any tips on getting this darned horseshoe clip off!?

are you sure that's right? I think if your wastegae was toast it would not have any ability to hold tension and you would have trouble making boost, not making too much boost. Check it first. apply pressure to the can and see if the rod moves.... I would test it before i went to all that trouble to remove it.

The can spring normally holds the swing valve closed, and ported boost pressure moves the diaphragm opposing the spring pressure moving the rod to open the SV to bleed off boost. Or? So, if the diaphragm melted and won't hold pressure, there is nothing to oppose the spring pressure and it's like removing the line to the can. Wide open, full rock and roll destruction mode!:wow1:

so you applied pressure to it, and saw no movement of the rod? then you'd be right, melted diaphram means no way to move spring, and too much boost. Weak spring= no boost.

tiny screwdriver or a pick. be careful not to loose it. A common replacement of a clip from GM carburetors. It might need to be bored out a bit to fit on, but they got on and off really easy. I'll try and find a link since I dont know what exactly the clip is called.

have a magnet close by the clip so when you pick it loose and it goes flying, the magnet can get it!

Here's the easiest clip to put on and take back off):

(Of course I'm assuming that there is a Radio Shack equivalent across the pond)

I remember on my last build I couldn't find a clip, so I crimped one of these bad boys on it http://i1.quinbyhardware.com/6714612.jpg

Well, try as I might, I can't get the %^&*clip off! I don't want to pull the head if it can be avoided. How would it work if I take the front mount loose and rotate the engine forward to get better access? It's a two-piece intake, and if I could get the upper piece off it'd be a much easier job (I think...).

You could try and get a set of oxygen/acetylene torches and burn it off (should melt off super quick because it's small) but be careful where you point that thing :thumb:

or soak it with a liberal dose of PB blaster and get a pair of vice grips or channel lock pliers and work it free? I recall with a 1pc intake I had decent amount of room under there in my 600.
