This CONTEST is for any member of Turbo-Mopar that does not have a Contributor Membership Status.

If you already have this status---PLEASE do not post a guess in here--but you can PM it to me.

I have been a car enthusiast for long time and last night I came across a car I had NO idea as to what is was. I went up and took some pictures and asked the driver questions as to WHAT YEAR, MANUFACTURE, & MODEL.

So if you can guess that FIRST, I will pay for you to move your status in Turbo-Mopar up a notch. So without further addo here are the pictures:

PS--that is not the correct motor so you know

Good Luck

One of very few cars whose make and model are both mentioned in the bible ... was eventually replaced by a car named after a town in America, then one named after a mountain range.

Was that car originally good by land AND sea?

Mike_Shepard

Well after asking and searching around I "think" I know what the answer to one of the clues is now I just need to work the others and see where it all fits in

Holley

Was that car originally good by land AND sea?

No, unless you count sinking like a brick as being good at sea ...

More clues - it was made by the world's third best motorcycle manufacturer (after Matchless and Norton). It was one of the last European car designs to use a seperate chassis. The doctor in "Heartbeat" drove one, and a later version was driven by Dame Thora Hird in "Last of the Summer Wine". The high-performance version went by a different, French, name which was later used as a moniker for high-performance Rovers.

No outward difference between '59 and '62, well done Greg for getting in there first :)

In case anyone wonders it was replaced by the Triumph 1300, then the Toledo then the Dolomite. The high-performance version was the "Vitesse", which ended up with a 2 litre straight-six that gave brutal performance thanks to its weight. My one was a lowly 998cc saloon model, it only did about 60mph flat-out!

Bradley - there's a guy in Texas thats put a BBC in an MGB convertible. They're ideal for V8 conversions, there was a factory V8 too ...

And, the same back bone chassis, engine and trans went under all Spitfires (or GT-6's in the case of the Vitesse) from 1962 through 1979. I've had a few Spits over the years...

Holley
07-26-2006, 04:07 PM
Forgot about that ... the curse of the uni-leaf strikes again, lol - I've seen one Spit and one Vitesse where the spring had broken right by the eye, and they're a pig to swap out. The Spit was fitted wit ha Dolomite Sprint 16v motor, it was a bit too much for the original spring I guess.

I had a '63 Triumph 2000 with the same straight 6 but fantastic modern design with independant suspension, coil springs, unibody etc. Handled great considering its size, shame the technology never got as far as the GT6 'cause that thing needed all the handling help it could get.

HOLLEY----I want to thank you for your helpful hints as I knew very little on the Triumph. Sure I have seen TR6 and the TR8 but the Herald was way out there for me.
