View Full Version : Oil spewing out of vent?

Ray and I broke in the engine on the Daytona tonight, and when we got it back to the shop, the trans was soaked. It appears that a fair amount of oil was pushed out the vent on the selector housing (568 trans). How and why? It may have been slightly over filled as I filled it with the car on jack stands, but that has never been a problem before on this or any other car.

Thoughts?

The vent might be messed up or you have it THAT full! Check it when the car is level. If you still have an issue, then maybe do the 4X4 trick of running a vent hose in a loop.

Are you 150% sure the oil isnt dripping onto the transmission from somewhere else ? I racked my head for several weeks on mine thinking the transmission was venting somehow and it ended up being oil blowing out of the motor and running down the side onto the transmission right in that area... The small seal on top of the housing (crossover shaft) hardly ever leaks and its a good thing because its NS1 and has been for years. pop that little plastic cap off the crossover shaft and make sure its not plugged up with rust, oil sludge ect.

Not sure how you filled it, but I usually lower the car down with the wheel off to sorta get it to a "level" state when I fill it. In my experience, the breather will only bleed off excess fluid, not push out what is needed. But that is with my 525, so not sure if things with the 568 are different. I'd clean it up and take it around the block, after checking the levels of course. :)

I took the airbox out tonight and poked around, thinking maybe the breather hose going to the turbo drain back tube may have been the source, but it's clean and dry like everything else on the engine. I'll look closer when I change the oil tomorrow, but I'm 99% sure it's the trans vent.

Well I'm going to chalk this up to a fluke. Cleaned everything up and drove it. No more oil anywhere. Everything's full.

There is a Technical Service Bulletin that address' that issue. The only problem is that only half of the parts are available. Of coarse it's the most important part thats not available anymore. I had a customer with the same problem. You might be able to adapt something to the vent to raise it up so it stops puking oil.

On the later transmissions the hole that normally holds the adjusting lock pin was enlarged and an additional vent cap was installed.

Could either of you go into some more detail?

I dont know if this was part of the TSB A.J mentioned but its not listed in the parts book for 1994. It only shows the locking pin for adjusting the cables.

TSB # 212493 came out in '93 and applies to all 523, 543, and 568 transmissions.

Hmmm, I might be able to come up with something then, if the issue arises again.

Honestly, I think it just had too much in it. The same exact thing happened to mine. Once I cleaned it up, it didn't do it again.

Very interesting... Thank you for the picture. My 523 was built in January 94 and as pictured I have the little vent cap but not the adapter/riser stack.

Eh, you're probably right. I just find it odd that it's never happened before, and I've filled all my transmissions with the car on stands, including this transmission previously.

I also forgot to mention that I had removed the diff cover and seal housings to re-seal everything, so almost all the old oil was out. Yet it only took two quarts to fill it.
