So I got a winter beater, a V6 A604 car. Price was very right, runs good, but has this transmission that scares me. With 164k, what do I need to look for? If I made a bad choice, anyone got a 543 and pedals/cables? :D

Change the fluid, flush it, ATF +4. Maybe look into a reflash update, run a decent cooler and that's it. Oh, if the solenoid pack is old, replace it, the newer ones seem to work better.

I thought you weren't supposed to flush any trans? The rule with my AW trans in the cherokee is every 20k miles drain the approx 3 quarts in the pan and refill with 3 new quarts. Cooler is a good idea, however. I don't generally have auto cars (Jeep excluded and I'm not worried about its trans)

Nothing wrong with flushing IF done after the filter change. If the pan is full of garbage, then flushing can be iffy.

Hows about just letting the trans pump out about 3 quarts and refilling with fresh? I'm not so hot on getting 164k of gunk out and what it will do (yeah, I know I made a thread asking for advice and now I'm second guessing what you say...)

Do a drain plug and get the mopar reusable gasket.

LOL, well doing a service will get you about 4L of new fluid.
