View Full Version : Attacking my rusty cab corner

So, over the course of the last year or so, I've noticed that I had started to get a little bubble on my passenger side cab corner.

I watched and waited and finally decided I should attack it before it turned into a real problem.

Last week I purchased a POR-15 starter kit, a bottle of touch up paint in the right color and some clear to go over that.

Turns out it was only on the surface. All I can imagine is that the seam there didn't get painted right the last time, or some paint flaked off or something. As you can see from the picture, the rust didn't actually go all the way thru.

First I hit it with the dremel with a wire brush, then I hit it with a grinding stone on the dremel, then I cleaned it with the POR15 'marine clean', then with the POR15 'metal ready', then a coat of POR15:

You can see some white/brownish on the seam to the front and rear of the trouble spot, but that's actually some sort of glue/putty/filler that runs the course of the seam. For now, I'm just focusing on the rust area.

I also purchased some POR15 'POR Putty', as I thought the rust was coming through from the inside. Turns out it wasn't, so no need to use that stuff. Supposedly it's like caulk, but made out of POR15, dries as hard as a rock and is sandable. I was going to use it to fill in, but instead, I'm just going to coat it with 2 or 3 coats of POR15 semi-gloss black, sand it till it looks purdy and then hit it with the blue touch up.

This is the only rust area on the entire truck, so hopefully it does what it says and 'stops rust in its tracks'. ;)
