In the next month Im going to be making (4) a 413 diff covers. They will be 3D CNC machined out of a 2"x10"x9" piece of 6061 aluminum and will have a 1/2" thick wall. Price will be $250 If anyone else wants one let me know so I can order more aluminum.

Thanks Adam

Since my aluminum case at about double the thickness of the steel diff cover was the only site of perforation* when I trashed my diff, I have to ask, what is the advantage of these???

(*Knocked plenty of dents in the diff cover though)

For one thing they will be nice and thick and rigid. I have never been able to get a stamped steel diff cover to completely seal because they usually bend slightly when you pry them off after being glued on with ATF sealant.

I am in for one.

The one guy that asked me to make them has been cracking the case in that area. He feels that the 1/2" aluminum cover will be more rigid then the 1/16 stamped steel cover, and can only help the problem.

What about an oil pan?

I don't really have the money to spare right now either, it's going to come out of what I usually put away each month. But I know that if I don't get in on this now, I will wish i had.

Ditto on the oil pan. Deep well, too; with a drain plug built in.

hmmm, beat mine flat again, knocked out the more obvious dents, resealed fine. Black RTV. Clean surfaces with brake cleaner. Criss cross tighten the bolts snug then torque to spec. Basic procedures.

That cover and a better oil pan will surely help the case from flexing,

and a better oil pan will surely help the case from flexing, :nod:Oil pan seems fairly rigid to me, but it doesn't hold on much thickness, i.e. can slop on the bolts... and the bolts don't hold very tight, really easy to strip out... so I dunno if it would need more work than just a pan to add rigidity down there.

Though there's some clearance.. not a lot, I'm thinking some sort of X brace and antislosh baffle in one, that you bolt in...

I'm wondering if a 1/4" steel "girdle" and some studs would accomplish the same effect, though with much less style!

I think the people who need this piece, know how valuable it could be..

Props for taking it on!

Shel-game, im not saying a nice deep pan with a built-in drain plug wouldnt be nice, but i add my own drain plugs. That and the reusable mopar gasket makes an auto 96% less annoying to work on.

I'm in for one Adam, thanks for getting these to market. I mentioned to Adam that I felt these would add another degree of stiffness in the diff area of our cases. Just finished building a new trans because of cracking issues. I'll try and post a pic.

The 31th case has a lot of added material and extra ribbing throughout the case. Definitely a plus for the extra weight of that he carries.

same theory as to why mopar went to a aluminum 5th gear cover on the 523/568 IMO. Can't do nothing but help. If I was keeping my 413 I'd be in for one.

WOW alot of interest in these! More then I thought anyway. Im going to be ordering the aluminum for these on tuesday, as of now we have 9 guys that want one. I dont plan on making any extra due to the cost of the aluminum. So if anyone else wants one let me know by tuesday. The covers will also have a 1/8" o-ring groove machined into the cover, so no more permatex! Thanks guys for all the positive comments! Cant wait to get the first one done! These are going to be one AWSOME piece of aluminum.

Is there any consideration to have covers made for other transmissions or is this something specific to a 413 that wouldn't benefit a 555 or 568? I know the covers aren't universal (I don't think), just asking. Regardless, I'm looking forward to seeing it. I love it when you guys custom make parts for our cars because they are usually better than what the engineers thought of with a LOT more R&D and money involved. Very impressive. :)

The worthwhile manual transmissions already have a thick cast aluminum cover for the differential, its also machine matched to the case as its part of differential support and not just a bolt on and go part.

On the 413 its just a cover, like a oil pan tipped up on its side.

This is one end of "that" argument where both extremes are silly... The factory engineers worked within the constraints of price, suitability to intended purpose, and ease of production assembly. Therefore the brief was something like "Costs 25c, can be screwed on by a robot or permafried union worker and holds hmmm, probably 150HP and 200ftlb is all we're ever gonna want out of it" ... though they possibly snuck themselves in some margin in case it ever went in a V6 commercial, and they were told to make it work... Anyway, point being that yes, if they were told in the first place it had to help hold 500+ HP and the budget was there for individual machining to fit... I think they might have come up with something pretty damn good...

The other silly extreme of course is "If it was faster/better/lighter/made it handle/gave better mpg... .... they'd do it at the factory." ... nope for the same reason..... unless you're buying a hand built supercar for several hundred thousands... (Though mpg may or may not apply depending whether they are endurance racing the thing)

Not, either, that I decry the efforts of individuals and our vendors to make better parts. Yes they're necessary.

However, with manufacturers these days doing finite element analysis to remove every last fraction of a gram of non-essential material, with more computer horsepower in a room than existed on the planet when these were laid out, we'll come to find that we've got it pretty good.

Ok guys this sucks! I went to order the aluminum yesterday, because they said it would be coming in tuesday. Now they tell me it will be another 40 day till they get it in! As you guys know aluminum is not cheap, and this place had the best price I could find. I just cant wait another 40 days. So if anyone knows of a good place that sells 2"x10" flat bar 6061 at a reasonable price let me know.

Since Jon runs a 525 still, that could be a possibility for him, although it would still be very weak due to the design of the case around the diff.

At $1.60 per LB. they would have been the best priced. To bad the didnt have it. Anyway I going to PM Bruce and see what price he can get from bethlehem aluminum. If I cant get it from Bruce Ill just wait the 40 days.

Yeah I will be making 9 more of these in the next month. Only reason for 10 total is that is how much aluminum I bought back in 2012. I'm going to finish those 9 and offer them first to the people that wanted one back in 2012. If any of those people are not interested anymore it will be offered to the next person in line. If more then the initial 10 covers are wanted I will do more but not at the quoted $250 since I will need to buy more aluminum and I know Im not going to get it as cheap as I did back in 2012.
