View Full Version : My R/T is dying.

Not stalling, its literally dying. Tonight on the way home I began to mosquito fog the interstate, I traced it back to excessive crankcase pressure either blowing oil past the turbo seals or the rings. For now I think the exhaust crankcase evac kit I just installed has a bad check valve but lately Ive been blowing oil out the oil cap and every seal on the engine. The only way I can keep crankcase pressure at bay is to run the oil separator box open, the only problem that throws oil all over. The cars Odometer stopped working in the early 2000's and it had 190k on it, Its been daily driven for at least 6-7 years so its got to have close to 300,000 on it now. Its on the third clutch that I know of and it was half --- re-ringed back when it had 190k. The Head was rebuilt by a lingenfelter tech but its showing its age again with worn guides. A previous owner replaced the whole drivers side inner fender and floor and did lots of repairs trying to save it but once me and my roommate got ahold of it and drove it all winter all the repairs begain reversing themselves. At least it has a FWD 50 trim and a BeCool 3 core aluminum radiator. Its been a great daily driver for both me and my roommate for the past 3 years. Ive already put over 12K on it this year already and I think the 400 mile weekly commute is finally doing it in.

The problem is Im unsure of what to do next. In my opinion the shell is not worth restoring, it has many years of daily use left in it though. Ive been thinking about selling it but Im not sure I can get enough to buy another daily driver. My next choice was to pull the drivetrain to rebuild and swap it in something else but I would still be stuck without a daily driver and I have no place to tear the car down. I could pull the drivetrain and put the trans in my shadow and drive that but it has some issues that need fixing that again I have no place to do in the apartment. My handle on life just broke

pull all the wiring drivetrain and suspension
and find a body that can use it all

Ive thought about it, but without a garage Im screwed. If the engine is indeed too tired to live on (compression/leakdown tomorrow) Ill most likely steal the parts off it that I need to get the shadow up and running. For now I can drive my roommates neon during the week since he's an OTR trucker.

Park it in my driveway, slip me $50 and sign the title over, and your worries are over ... :eyebrows:

Not sure what to tell you, I guess fix whatever you can get running the fastest and easiest. Any friends you can bum some garage or work shop space? Any U fix it places around?

85 new yorker with either a flat battery or a charging issue for 250 in fort wayne, get yourself something stock and somewhat reliable and then worry about the shadow and r/t. R/T + Shadow = 10s?

I do have an R/T wire harness that I pulled from the parts car. Id love to swap the shadow.

I was going to look at that NY'er this weekend but the $$ won't be there, found out my check is going to suck. Looks like a good deal especially for a dd/winter beater.

Im probably worse off, my check sucks every week and I got some bills. Plus we already have 4 cars here at the apartment for 3 people.

Rig it up enough to keep driving it. If you dont have the $250 for a running car then you REALLY cant be talking about taking your running car apart. Remember you can always lessen your blowby issues by just running no boost. Sounds like you need a running car more than you need boost so i'd consider it.

I could get the money but my luck I would pop 3 brake lines and the fuel lines on the way back and the 250 dollar car turns into another parking spot holder that cost $1500.

Ok, drove it around and the smoke stopped, Ill say it was the crankcase pressure pushing oil out the turbo seals. I did a compression test though and it surprised me:

1=160
2=165
3=165
4=165

Those were wet or dry, 5 pumps.

So fix the evac, stop boosting it. Since the motor is potentially not good, its not a great idea to start a project that also my not work out. Putting the motor into a slightly lighter chassis will not help, will not solve any problems, and won't make your landlord happy. Time for a non project car. My AA 3.0 Spirit just got a refreshed shortblock but now I am fighting every other age related gremlin. Just had to redo the engine bay wiring harness. The trans is getting so loose and the idler shaft knocking makes me think I just spun a bearing, its driving me crazy. Wheel bearing just started going bad. Did I mention the missing paint and creeping surface rust makes me want to cry when I see the car? It sat for a few months and got mold everywhere inside where my interior was previously very nice. Only car I can drive to work right now because my Duster is not registered because its missing a window, and my Starlet is not legal yet.
I am really unable to avoid beating on my car so I know how hard it is for you.

It was all a bad exhaust evac check valve causing all the problems. Now its all better with awesome compression test numbers and no oil has been pushed out anywhere. I used to fill the valley between the valve covers with one good pull, now its nice and dry. Oh and my living in an apartment has just been solved, Im moving to a house back in my hometown at the end of this month.
