View Full Version : Widest Tire on 8" Rim - 1980 Dodge D150

I am putting some 17" diameter, 8" wide, 4.5" backspacing wheels on my 1980 D150 and I can't decide on the rear tires. I'm thinking 275/60/17 will be a little too wide after measuring with my SS/T's wheel and tire. I'm afraid the tires might hit the top of the wheel opening. Keep in mind the SS/T wheel is 9" wide.

What is the widest tire you should put on an 8" rim? I would kinda like to go a little wider than the 255/70/15's (29.05" tall/10.04" wide) that were on the rear.
Here are the sizes I've been thinking about:
275/60/17 - 29.99" tall - 10.83" wide
265/60/17 - 29.52" tall - 10.43" wide
255/60/17 - 29.05" tall - 10.04" wide

Those will all fit fine on an 8" rim. What is the backspacing onthe SST wheel?

Shoulda been garage saling with me here on Sat, I saw a metric buttload of big and wide truck tires and rims, at "cheap to try" prices.

I didn't measure the SS/T wheel's backspacing. It isn't bolted on. I just measured the distance from the back of the slot wheel to the leaf spring and set the SS/T wheel in that position. I didn't realize it when I made the post, but the SS/T wheel is also an inch wider.
My initial thought is for a truck tire (i.e. not a 40 or 45 profile) on an 8.0 i would go up to 275 but not wider. my .02

I'm thinking I will try the 275/60/17. Surely my buddy will let me swap tires to another size if they don't work on the truck.

I finally bought the new tires for the 17" Ansen Sprints I've had for almost a year. I'm sorry about the pictures. I don't have the gas tank in the truck (fuel level sender repair), so I can't back the truck out of the basement for pictures. They are Falken Ziex tires. I went with 235/60/17 in the front and 275/60/17 in the rear.

Kevin, looks good. Just me, but I would have gone with 255 fronts for better grip.
I like it.:thumb:

I was wanting to go 255 in front, but I was concerned about clearance. Now that they are mounted and bolted on, I think I was right to go with the 235.

Hmmm, passenger tires, and a model known for squabby sidewalls, and a weight rating barely adequate for just the truck, no load... :(

I shot a couple better pictures. I need to get a fuel level float so I can get the gas tank back in and take some good pictures.
