View Full Version : 555 to 568 conversion worth it?

Unfortunately one of my shifter cables broke upon removing the trans and motor from the car because the white plastic end piece on the transmission was so brittle so I have to replace the cable . I'm highly considering at this point of just converting over to the 568 transmission if it's really worth it in the end. I know I will need to cables, and a new shifter to go with it but that wouldn't be an issue since I have to install a new cable for the 555 if I keep it. Just looking for opinions on if I should tackle this as well while everything is out.

The vehicle is an 87 Daytona Shelby-Z

Other than a few things I dont think its worth it. Strength wise they are basically the same so I would just find a new cable or thread the rod and install a rod end. I actually like the notchy shifts better than my 568.

So I could just reuse the rod end rather than get a whole new cable? How could I do this that would be awesome!

Excellent question! I have three nickels now  Is there any real advantage gearing wise to the newer trans? I always liked the close ratios of the 555

555 and 568 gearset are the same. same FD of 3.85 as well....

I prefer the 555 due to having reverse in the correct spot. All the 60s muscle cars that I have owned had reverse beside 1st, so that feels natural to me. Below 5th seems so import to me.

Thanks

The 568 is just a refined 555. Probably the biggest plus over the 555 is the front pinion shaft bearing have its own bearing race which is pretty much good forever, dont have to worry about that area blowing up usually..

1st gear went from 3.00:1 to 3.31:1 in 92. Not a huge difference but something to be aware of.

After going from my 555 to my 3.50 geared 523 I'll NEVER Go back to the 555/520 tranny again. The shifting is so much nicer especially in a daily driver. Easier to find short throw shifters for or just do it yourself with a kit like Bender is selling. 555 is a truck tranny, 523/568 shifts like butter but holds up like the truck tranny, if you've got the parts, and everything's out I'd go 523/568. I like the 3.50 geared 523 better as the rpms are 2500 at 65 and about 2700 at 70. Nice and low.

I thought the 520 shifted just fine, the sundance has the 3.50 520 and the SC has the 523 3.50(personal vehicles). I dont prefer one over the other..The 555 is a stout piece, had a built GLH with 555. Matter of fact had to pull the 568 in charger because of a busted sync ring, not the first one Ive heard of either. No failures on the 555 or 523, knock on wood. BUT its alot easier to drop a obx in 523 3.5...like a drop in nearly.

The only real advantages of the 568 over the 555 are that the pinion shaft support bearing is larger and has the separate race, and that the 5th gear cover is cast aluminum, so it becomes structural to the case...no need to put in a chromoly plate, the last one is you can actually find cables for it.

I personally like the way my older 4-plane trannies feel (520/555). I like the notchiness, it feels more solid to me. All the 3-plane trannies I've ever experienced felt "rubbery". This was NEVER effected by what bushings or shifter was used. It is something inherent to that design.

That being said, it seems it is easier to find parts for the newer transmissions. I suppose it really is a personal preference.
