Here are some photos of GLH #2. 1986 GLH Turbo with a DC intercooler kit.
It needs some atention, but has a lot of potential. Just giving it a bath made things look a ton better. I'm working on replacing the hardware store plumbing connectors and sorting out the vacuum lines in time for SDAC.
The wheels are going away tomorrow. To be replaced with a set of pizza wheels painted black.

Two pair. The GLHS in the corner is ours, so are the two GLH Turbos. The GLHS heading out the door belongs to a customer. We put our shift linkage on it along with a moly bearing plate, a differential truss and a new clutch.

Swapped the wheels and got it running again. Here are some photos of the old intercooler connectors that were replaced with silicone. also some photos of the car with it's new wheels. They give it that Knight Rider look.

We have the new headliner installed and the interior panels refinished.
The scoop arrived yesterday. It covers the hole in the hood nicely.

catching up on a few build threads

shouldn't the hood scoop face forward directing cold air on the intercooler (wrx style) instead of facing rear and drawing hot under hood air through the intercooler

ajakeski
10-10-2011, 10:01 PM
It'll draw cool air cowl induction style. That is how the scoop sold by direct connection for this kit was.

I've been Trying to get around to putting floors in this one since we tore it apart last summer. I thought we would get it done over last winter, but that didn't happen.
Now the Cuda is off to the paint shop so I have some room to work on this GLH.
The driver's side floor is done, Tomorrow I'll start on the passenger side. Funny thing with this car is that there's no other rust, just the two front sections of floor.
For once I planned ahead. I saved the templates I made when I did the floor in GLH #1. Saved a lot of time on this one.

The welding is done. Tomorrow I can finish applying seam sealer and get the floor ready for Lizard skin.

Flux core welds aren't pretty, but they sure soak into rusted steel well.
I kept track of my time spent fabricating the floors and welding. I have 23 hours putting these in. That doesn't count gutting the interior.
I'm glad it's done, floors are a pain in the butt.

The GLH is at about 95%. A few more minor details to tend to and it'll be done.

No major upgrades have been done on this car over the past few years other than maintence and repairing things as they fail.

Last summer we put a beating on it at the SDAC GoCart track autocross and that may have been the straw that broke the camel's back. Beside rattling and vibrating like it was going to explode, the car began to feel like it was loosing power.
We built a new engine over the winter. 1988 TII block from a 1989 Maserati TC. Forged crank with Venolia pistons and a set of reworked TII rods from Turbo's Unleashed.
Ported head, back cut valves, ported water pump, baffled oil pan, etc.

The Turbo is new with a 2.5 inch swingvalve and a ported exhaust manifold.

In addition the transmission was replaced with an overhauled a520 with an OBX differential. The trans was converted for use with mechanical L body shift linkage.

Here's some photos of it coming together:

The GLH runs and drives again. Finished up a few things today and did a four wheel alignment.

We used Venolia pistons on this engine. They're noisy as hell when cold. We even had the machine shop tighten up the piston to wall clearance when all the work was done.

The rod linkage conversion on the 520 worked without any issues. I didn't even have to adjust the linkage.

We ditched the fart can muffler and installed a Magnaflow. It's mounted where the cat would normally go. Sounds good ,dropped a few pounds and lowered the center of mass.

KYB struts were replaced with Konis on all four corners.

So far, so good.

The only problem I can see is that you've broken the gravity in your garage. Good luck getting the car out with it like that.

I was having issue with oil in the compressor side of the turbo. Pulled the turbo yesterday and found it had a dynamic seal instead of a carbon seal. Rebuilt the new turbo using a carbon seal and the oil problem is solved.

Did you make the rod converter or did you buy it from OmniPotent? Just curious because I need to get the 555 in mine at some point.

I made the conversion brackets using stock 525 brackets and a 555 bobble strut bracket.
The hardest part is getting the 525 brackets. The 555 bobble strut bracket is still available from Mopar.
I have some more detailed photos if you want them.
