We just got one in at the dealer I work at. It's a 2000 Sport, extended cab with the 2.5 AMC 4-cyl and 5-speed. 2WD. 115K one owner.
I drove it, drives nice like most modern Dakotas and had adequate power for a four cylinder....especially compared to the dreaded 2.2 S-10s....Transmission shifts very smooth...clutch is good except for the typical throw out bearing rattle.
Check engine light is on....small evap leak....most likely a rotted evap hose.
I'm considering trading my 1999 Grand Voyager straight up for it since I've had zero interest in it since I've had it for sale since last month.
Anything about the 2nd gen Dakotas....the 2.5 specifically I need to know about? I really don't see a lot of 2nd gen Dakotas in the shop..they seem to hold up well.
