I was 16, just had gotten drivers license and was out cruising in my '90 Daytona and I spot a bright red '87 Shelby Lancer with super dark tint sitting in front of some kinda construction shop. I turn around on the first available road and get back to the parking lot with the Lancer. I of course get out to inspect. It looked to be all stock other than a fairly low stance and the super dark tint. It also had a large exhaust based on the size of the turndown out the back. I didnt realize then that the fact that it was a leather 5 speed car made it quite rare.

I only saw it once more a few months later driving down the road. I didnt see another numbered car for probally 2 years until I spotted an all white CSXT(which inspired me to paint my current CSX-T all white) for sale locally.

When did you see your first numbered car?

1987 Shelby Lancer, owner had 2. This was in 1994 or so. One of them is still under the same carport on Moorehead Street just down the road from Charlotte motor speedway.

'89 CSX-VNT at Carlisle in 1999. I just walked into the fairgrounds for the first time and seen it coming in through the gate. I pointed and told my dad I wanted one someday. Now I have one haha.

It was a Shelby Lancer back in the late 80's in Franklin, TN. The first one I ever drove was a 1987 GLHS I found in the "Wheels and Deals". I still can't believe the guy let me drive it.

yeah i might be wrong, but i think 317 and 318 were owned by brothers, and bill came across 319... OR 318 and 319 were owned by brothers. and i am wrong about 317.
either way the one I saw was FS for like 3500 back in 1997/1998? maybe its the one bill bought? a few other ones too i cant recall, but i do remember seeing a 89 csx there once too... for a while syracuse was number car heaven to me.

The first one i ever saw in person was an 89 CSX-VNT. I worked a parts store where A kid my age came in buying parts for various turbo mopars and one day he came in and said "you have to see this" and in the lot was his just purchased CSX. I knew what it was but i didn't know what it REALLY was, and i'm not sure he did either. We both commented that the valve cover had "shelby'' on it and not the regular ''chrysler turbo''. We were so dumb.........

Todd Nelson restored #276 in Brian Quackenbush's Dad's garage back in 2005. It was just taken out of it's "storage bubble" so I could go over it. Absolutely flawless. Kicking myself for not pulling the trigger on it. He said it would take about 30k to duplicate and I think that may be low estimate. The second one I've ever seen was the one I brought home from Ohio, car #168.

I bought my shelby charger from a car lot in 93' that always had a couple of 86 & 87 glhs' for sale, not the same one (I don't think!), but he still has one for sale now! http://priceautosales.com/sales.html

A 1987 GLHS Charger, I test drove it @ Bob Dance Dodge in Florida. The sales man was telling me how peppy it was , He said" Get on it!) So @ the next light I did just that! Light turned green & I side stepped the clutch and run it through the gears. He was shocked but he was the one that suggested it... So we go back to the dealership & I say sign me up. Unfortunately the Shelby did not qualify for there first time buyer program @ the time so I bought a New Dakota instead.

The first one I ever saw in person was mine, literally! The car transporter pulled up in front of my house with my long awaited purchase looking a little worse for ware on the back. I had purchased 87 GLHS #75 sight unseen, and had it trucked up from Modesto, through Vancouver and on to Calgary. The trip though the mountains in late winter on an open carrier left the car "slightly" dirty!

I would have to say an 86 GLHS for myself. Don't recall the number.

First one I saw was '86 GLHS #061. The car was owned by Jessie Buhr at the time, this would have been early summer of '97. I took one of my old GLHT's down to Porky's in St.Paul and ran into Jessie down there.

Sometime in August of 86 there were seven of them parked at Trail Dodge in Inver Grove Heights in MN. I would have bought one then but I had two one year old cars that had practically no miles on them, one being my 85 GLHT that was bought Memorial day of 86. Still have that one. 46K on that one. Wish I had taken some pics of them sitting all in a row. I eventually ended up with one of the seven I saw on the lot that day. That one ended up being #276 that was talked about earlier. I have a pretty good article about the GLHS from the local auto and sports writer from the MPLS Star & Tribune. He road tested # 270. That was in the paper in late August.

The first numbered car I ever saw was my '68 AMX. I found out they were numbered when I was buying it from my Sister and her boyfriend. As for Shelby's, I believe it was an '89 CSX at the Dodge dealership when we brought the Shelby Charger in for service. That or the number of '87 GLHS's I saw after buying the Charger. When I bought the '86 Charger Shelby, a guy I worked with asked If I knew what a GLHS Charger was. I of course, didn't.

First one I ever saw was '89 CSX 135 on a used car lot in PA with something like 7k miles on it and absolutely mint, perfect and original sometime around 1995. Not knowing what it was, I didn't think much of it. A friend ended up buying it and it turned out to be a 2 option car.

Unfortunately, that car ended up getting totalled with around 13k miles on it. Such a shame.

I think GLHSHELBY bought one of the Lancer from the guy.

The first one I saw was also the Todd Nelson #276 car in Alan Q.'s dad's garage. I couldn't believe it when he pulled off the car cover. There was not a spot on the car (now trying to keep it that way). I ended up buying the car and Alan asked me how I was going to get it home. He was surprised when I told him I was going to drive it back home (to MI from PA). He thought I was going to have it hauled on a (hopefully covered) trailer. I told him I could pick it up a week later. Alan told me that I needed to buy some of that white tape that they put on the new cars for the drive home. I called around in the Detroit area and finally found a source who might sell me a single roll of the stuff (normally only sold in bulk). I called the company and told the guy who answered the phone that I needed a small quantity to cover the front of a car for a drive from PA to MI. He asked what kind of car. I told him a Dodge Omni (didn't think he would know what a GLHS was). He actually started chuckling. He then put his hand over the end of the phone and yelled back to his boss that there was a guy on the phone who wanted to cover a Dodge Omni. The boss got on the phone and said, well this is a first. He said they have had many people (usually doctors) calling to cover Porsches, Ferrari's, Maserati's but a Dodge Omni. He said, I have to sell you a roll. I tried to explain to him why the car was so special but I bet he is still telling the story of the guy who bought a roll of his tape to cover a Dodge Omni lol.

The first numbered cars I can absolutely recall seeing were a couple 89 CSX's and Dakotas lined up in the front row of the old Papa's Shelby Dodge. I looked at those CSX's every day on my commute to and from CCSU, which was right next to the old Papa's. I'm pretty sure that one of the 89's had to be Troys mint #282 that he bought from Dominic Papa a few years ago.

Back in 1988,I saw my first numbered car at a Dodge Dealership in Spokane,Washington. I purchased the 87 GLHS # 043 on the spot to replace my tired out 85 GLH-Turbo. Ever since then, whenever I see a car thats a little more rare than mine ( I will upgrade to the better one ). After many years of doing this,I am mainly left with the prototypes and best car numbers .

The first numbered car I ever saw was probably my own, Shelby Lancer #63. I had plenty of turbo mopars over the years, but none were numbered. I didn't realize the significance until later after I had completed the sale and researched it. This reminds me that I need to title and register my baby here in CT. She hasn't even been out of the garage yet this year (due to a distraction I know have called a Charger R/T). That will change soon and I love these cars.

First numbered Shelby that I recall seeing was Shelby Lancer #79. A local guy around town owned it and we had heard about it through my Dad. The guy had wanted to sell it to us. One day Pat and I were driving in the Turismo and as we came off of the I-70 exit ramp we saw it just ahead merging onto the same road we were. It was a great looking car. Since we were in high school though, I didn't have the need to buy a pure showcar so I passed on it. It ended up in the northern part of the midwest IIRC though. Haven't ever seen an 87 SL driving like that since. and that was around '02 or '03.

First one I saw was a 1989 Shelby Dakota. It came into Keene Dodge in 1989 where I worked. I had the privilege of prepping it for sale which meant driving it around to the side of the dealership. The buyer was a Shelby Mustang collector who didn't want it touched/washed/anything. It stayed in MD for several years, went to Texas, and may now be in a museum, it had super low mileage on it. I can't remember what # it was though.

i remember it like it was yesterday: first Whittier car i saw in person was Kenny Papa's 1986 GLHS #015, and i saw it as i was driving my 1985 GLH Turbo into the 1988 Mopars At The Polo Grounds, Farmington CT. I must have spent 2 hours crawling all over that car in amazement. That car now sits inside his Jeep-Dodge dealership on permanent display with only 5,000 miles on it and in totally original condition.

Later that same year I saw literally dozens of 87 GLHS's and CSX's at Papas dealership.

I saw my 1st numbered car last August. A friend and I drove for 4 straight days to Alabama. Took GLHS0502 out for a quick spin then took the rest of the day to get the money transferred and load the car with 6 bins of parts plus lots of larger extras. Then 4 days to get back home!
Yesterday my buddy came over and we ripped 1/2 the intake and exhaust off to remove a manifold to turbo gasket that the shop who did my head gasket last year "Never installed".
Maybe next week it will get put back together...LOL

good luck finding the turbo to manifold gasket. it never existed. :)

most people just use a bit of wheel bearing grease on the manifold. it flashes to carbon and seals up any minor imperfections. the factory used no gasket.

My problem is the shop DID put in a gasket and the exhaust leaked almost immediately after. This project is to try and fix more of the careless errors made by the "Performance" machine shop I went to! (Long story, vacuum line errors, broken wiring! And I blew the ceramics off the electrodes on 4 sets of plugs!...ETC)
