I have a question that I hope someone can answer quickly and accurately. We are trying to rebuild an A568 transmission that came out of a 1991 Spirit R/T. I needed 1-2-3-4 gear cluster but only 2 & 3 were available from MOPAR new. I did some looking on the internet and found a company is NV that sells parts for any tranny. I contacted them gave them a run down of what i needed and then I had the senior master tech fax them all the teeth count from the A568.

Well the teeth count inside the A568 were:

1st: 33
2nd: 36
3rd: 37
4th: 32

The gears that they sent were:

1st: 51 (guess)
2nd: 54
3rd: 55
4th: 50 (guess)

They sent a new input shaft and all but my question is what are these gears from, will they hold up to 14 psi, or should I send them back and just buy another used A568 ???

Need your thoughts ASAP
Chuck

Why don't you call the company you bought it from and ask them where the gears are from and how much torqpe/hp will the gears handle?

I'm not the trans guru out west but I helped my buddy Pat make a couple 568's from a 523 case and a LATE 555 gearset. Build date on the 555 needs to be Nov 88 or later and it has to have the paper cone synchros to use it in the 523. By deduction, couldn't the same late 555 gearset be used in your application, or am I off base here? Cliff? TurboJerry? Chris? Boyd? I'm sure all of you know this one for Chuck;)

Yes it's the same. 89-91 555/568 use the same 1st/2nd, while 3rd/4th is the same from 87-93. Problem is the 1st/2nd, hard to find good parts at this point.
As far as the teeth, I'll check the 520 gearset we just threw out, but if those counts are accurate it's most likely NOT a 568 gearset.

The place I got the gears from is www.drivetrain.com and they are Las Vegas, NV. They are 3 hours behind us in time zone so they are not open yet. I will call them after my lunch. I will let you guys know what they say.

Now I find out the the shaft that the clutch rides on has a differant pattern than the A568. I bet they sent parts to my tech for an A555. Talk about a hybrid tranny. I at least received a 30 day parts warranty.

The 568 did have 2 input shafts in different years, so they might have sent the older style like mine.

You know I didn't even think of that.... So there is a small and large spline a568 trans....???? Thanks for jogging my memory.

Yeah, IIRC a 13/16ths wrench wont fit over the input shaft of large spline trans.

the vnts used small spline, the r/ts used the large spline

The large spline has 17 teeth and the small spine has 18. Basically, the 90 A568 got the 89 A555 input shaft and main shaft. Mainly what changed was the trans case and shifter gadgetry. The main shaft pinion-side bearing is larger to accomodate the race that they press on to protect the shaft.

It sounds like you got A523 gears. To answer your last question, they will hold up to 14psi perfectly fine. The trouble is that they won't mesh with your input shaft. Did you get a new one of those too?

So wait a minute, not trying to thread jack here, but I have a 555 with a bad #2 synchro and the tag says it was built in '91. You're saying I could pop the gearset in a junkyard 523 and not only would I never have to mess with a reverse lockout, but it would probably be cheaper than a moly plate and synchros and just as strong?

Most likely. The build date indicates a warrenty replacement trans, and would most likely have the 89' style gearset, but it could have the 87/88 style. You would have to disassemble it to be sure.

To swap it into a 523 case, you need to use all the shift forks and synchro's from the 523 with the 555 gears, mainshaft and input shaft, or use the 523 mainshaft and diff to get a 3.50 f/d.
