This sucker can turn!! All the cars I'm following have slicks or DOT racing tires and I have street tires; Kuhmo Ecsta all around. The WRX that I wave by also had full slicks. Can't wait to get my own slick! Enjoy and pump up the volume!

Awesome running!! It sounds nice!!!
Tell the Corvette to get the hell out of the way.....LOL!
That looked like fun. When you get slicks, it will so much nicer going into and coming out of the turns.

Thanks Andreas! And yes, I had to keep my distance from the cars on the braking zone because I have too much brake power for the amount of grip available by the tires. I'd rather use the little grip they provided with the car's dynamics I had the brakes to brake very late but I just didn't trust the grip of the street tires, I chose to do the safe thing for me and the competitor in front of me. The vette guy could not believe it. In later sessions he did let me by to follow my line and he told me that I kept inching away from him in a out the turn. I did caught up the Mach I, the Z06 and the WRX after the blue TSX waved me by then had to chase down an Integra Type R and an M3, then I was again on their tail. It was so much fun!!

I have to say though, I'd have to find a different muffler or resonator or something, if it sounds like it does in the vid. Maybe (probably) sounds better in person.

That video is not high quality, it sounds better in person. I have to admit it sounds violently loud specially at high rpm. I love it. It has a Dynomax Race Bullet muffler.

Cool, yeah I'm picky about sound anyway lol. It definitely looks like it's pulling pretty good for an NA 2.8 V6.

This is sort of off-topic but did you ever get in-car vid from the spirit on a road course?

Nice. I want to eventually run slicks on my car as I've been told it will be a night and day difference, BUT the suspension tuning will then show its deficiency of being a bit too soft with the amount of body roll it will have. I've been told by people that have driven the car on track that it is basically as good as it can be for a street set-up and NOT to mess with it if I intend to keep running it that way. The one guy even said that it is the most balanced and fun FWD car he'd EVER driven! :thumb: That made me feel good!

Rattlesnake
05-04-2011, 09:54 AM
That is very true! I'm installing a custom sway bar kit and Koni's with the slicks so I can find the best balance. Right now I have 350# springs all around on KYB's, stock front sway bar and aftermarket rear bar. This set up is the best for my car on street tires but once I install the slicks I have to start from scratch.

What KYB's are you running? How do they handle the 350# spring?

Rattlesnake
05-04-2011, 06:30 PM
For the car's set up and weight they worked wonderful. I was very impressed with the performance of the KYB's. I have the gas shocks (white) in the front and the grey KYB GR2 in the rear.

I think you need to update your build thread now, Rattlesnake :) lol

2237, so about the same weight as a L-body. Cool.

I also found this video from another competitor. You start to see me in front of the M3 that is in front of the camera car. I just re-entered the track after finding the limit of adhesion of the street tires. I locked the fronts and since I knew I wasn't going to be able to recover and make that turn I released some pressure and slowed the car enough to slowly coast on the grass, turn and go back on the track and that is where the video begins. The rule is that if you put all 4 wheels off the track you must come into the pits for a check up by the marshals. Well, that happened 2 turns before the pit entrance and I just kept going because my adrenaline was so high and this is why. After hounding an "Eleonor" clone with twin turbos for 3 laps, he lets me by because I was riding on his bumper on the braking zone and through the turns, on the straights it was a different story. I just wanted to widen the gap through the tight section before the back stretch so I can have enough lead to prevent him from getting too close to me that I had to wave him by. This off excursion took place while trying to do that. I re-entered and started to chase him down again but then I see a black flag on the back stretch with my number on it 3 turns before the pit entrance. I start to slow down and then proceeded to enter the pits.

Cool, I've been there once helping a friend w/ a MG Midget racecar. What's it cost to run down there? Did you go on a special open track day, or w/ a club, or...?

It is a NASA (National Auto Sport Association) club event called HPDE (High Performace Driving Event) It cost $269 (depending on the track) for 2 day event. Each day has four 20-25 minutes sessions. Can get all info here:

Cool, not a bad price for 2 days. Is a racing license required?

By the time you get to HPDE-4 you can acquire a racing license.

By the time you get to HPDE-4 you can acquire a racing license.I was talking to a guy on Friday about doing this. He goes down to mid ohio and runs a mustang. I told him what I had and he actually didn't laugh. After I mentioned the coil overs he started to get a little interested. He said it is a perfect car to get started with like some of the VWs and Miatas.

If you REALLY want to enjoy your car in a safe way without worrying about breaking the law and doing it in a control enviroment, this is the way to do it. I can guarantee you that after one weekend you'll be hooked on it and driving like a grandma on the streets. You'll also find out that it is safer to drive at the track where every body is going fast and paying attention; not texting or on the phone or reading news paper or eating bugger or playing the violin:lol:(I saw the last two for real in rush hour in downtown Manhattan, NY).

Okay, so it is not required for the lower levels?

Okay, so it is not required for the lower levels? No, partly because you will have an instructor with you in the lower levels.

Do some research on HDPE, It starts out as one on one driving with an an instructor and they add more and more difficulties on untill you get to HDPE 4. You can use anything as long as its safe.

HPDE 1 is the one that requires an instructor, once on HPDE 2 you can have an instructor if you chose. The key is that if you want to get out of HPDE 1 asap so you can drive by yourself. In order to do that you have to earn the instructors's trust by doing everything they tell you, and once they see you can drive on your own they will sign you off. If you don't you'll spend a lot of time in HPDE 1.
