Looking to upgrade the brakes on my '86 Z.

I have:

'89 CS Daytona complete brake system
'89 Caravan (still running)

From what I understand, the rear vented brakes from the CS are going to be the best I can get.

The front calipers from the caravan are also gonna be the best bet.

Will I use the master cylinder and prop valve from the '89 CS?

What if I put the '89 CS calipers on the '89 mini to keep it on the road and free up the '89 mini calipers for the '86 Z?

Thanks.

if that cs daytona has vented rears, then it has better brakes on the front than the caravan. the car should be able to donate ALL the bad boy stuff. take everything that comes off the front and rear unibody including the axle, k frame, etc and don't forget the m/c and prop valve!!!

The k-frame and coil springs would be of use as well.

Swap all the suspension/brakes from the CS to the Z and grab some mini calipers from napa or the JY shouldn't be too much $. It would be the 14" wheels bring in the Daytona ones a cores.:D http://www.napaonline.com/masterpages/NOLMaster.aspx?PageId=430&CatId=3&SubCatId=13

So, the mini calipers will attach to the CS knuckles?

an 89 cs w/ vented rears will have 11" front brakes which are bigger than the brakes on the caravan which will 10-1/4" with 14" wheels. you will need to use the front knuckles from the cs, as the 89 11" front brakes had the caliper bracket built into the knuckle, unlike the 91 RT 11" brakes that had the bracket as a seperate bolt on piece. but heck, you got the parts, so its no biggie! i wouldn't bother with vented rear disc, unless i had 11" fronts, not the correct balance otherwise.

OK, so the '89 CS with the vented rears (which is what I have for a parts car) will have 11" diameter front disc rotors. Larger than the 10.25" Caravan.

Does the Caravan or the CS have a better piston diameter in the caliper?

Thppffft. I'll just forget about the mini parts and use everything off the CS, 11" fronts, vented rears, everything.

I was wondering about using the mini fronts with 11" rear disc. Seeing as the fronts do most of the work, is should not have a negative effect. I'll never know, since I am going 11" all around.

The mini calipers have the same piston as the 89 cs. The bracket on the 89 cs caliper is larger to accomodate brake pads for the 11.44" rotor.

Woops( I need sleep) yeah if it is the 11" just swap all of them over. I bought a 91 Daytona Shelby parts car for the 11" setup.:thumb:

the 11" brakes had a 60mm piston in the caliper just like the caravan brakes, but you get more cooling efficiency and braking surface with the bigger rotors. take the front brakes (and knuckles), rear brakes, prop valve and master cylinder from the donor car and you will be good. the SLH brake packages are messed up. rear disc is nice, but the front brakes are where most of your stopping power comes from, so don't skimp!!!
