Starter heat soak?

Has any one had issues with this happening? I was having some fun with a DSM and I pulled off a side street to turn around and go home when I got a call so I pulled over in a nearby lot and talked with the car off went to start it and nothing happened so I jumped the starter nothing happened still. After a few hours stuck in the lot I was able to start it I got it home. After about 2 more hours I went out to check to see if it would start and it does without any problems. Did I heat soak the starter or is it just failing?

Yes, if you don't have the heat shield or some form of wrap on it.

Use a univsersal blanket or use the Nippo starter.

Are you talking a turbo blanket or a starter blanket?

Hes talking about anything that would keep the heat off the starter. Like exhaust, heat shield, exhaust wrap or alike.

Similar problem happened on my 88 Z. The heat shield was missing and the heat from the exhaust/ turbo had cracked the starter solenoid. Absoultly nothing would happen when you turned the key, but all other electrical for the car was fine. After it cooled down enough it would start fine with no problem what so ever.

What does heat soaking do to the life of a starter, cant be good but is it REALLY bad?

It will destroy windings, and the lubricant inside, and I imagine cant be good for the magnets which will weaken as they get hotter. Im sure the windings could get damaged over time. Im sure a google search would supply more reading than any of us care to do..
