What year is your car "? Just to let you know sometimes your shifter rod bushing pops off because your motor is moving forward and back to much .
I definetly would check all the motor mounts. Forward motion sell the bushing if yours is missing or needs replaced. I will try to find a pic for you.:)

Could also just be plain worn out. Check my thread 'new shift linkage install', in it someone gives the Mopar P/N for the clips, I think they run about $3. They are not a fix all, they just help hold the rods on. I just installed new rods and was amazed at the difference.
Pop yours back on. If it seems to go on rediculously easy, then new rods ($12 & $15 from mopar) are your cheapest/easiest bet. A conversion to hiem joints are the trick way to go if you want to keep the rods.

Do the heim joint conversion...sooooo much better. I might be selling the first one I did in a couple of weeks when I get back from my GF's house. LMK if you want a first crack at it.

OK. Have you looked at the motor/tranny mounts to make sure theres no problem there? Before modding anything I always recommend you make sure that you know what is actually causing the problem. Worn/broken mounts allowing drive train movement....or worn out rod ends?
If it's worn out rod ends, I would'nt even bother modifying one end. If this is 'just for now' I would simply buy a new rod. It sounds like it's the one with 2 45* bends. If it is, it's $15. Pop it on, maybe a clip or two for extra insurance and that rod is good for another 10 years. Then you'll have the old rod to modify at your liesure. It's not simply modifyiing the rod, you also have to remove the ball that the rod end snaps onto, then drill a hole in it's stead.
If you really want to do one, then you'll need:

3/8" Female Rod End (1)
3/8"x1-1/2" Bolt (1)
3/8" Nylock nut (1)
3/8" jam nut (1)
3/8" rod end/cone washers (2)

Pay particular attention to the center to center distance (socket centers).

Turbo XT,
If the rod going to the transmission has a plastic socket that slips onto the ball on the transmission arm the poly insert in the socket could be gone. When the engine rocks the rod pops loose, still check the engine mounts, but I bet the insert in the socket is gone. If that's the case, you can still get them new from the dealer. I got both rods for my 86 GLHT a couple weeks ago. Mopar had them in stock at the Newark, Delaware parts depot, I think they were about $18 dollars each. When the parts guy pulls up the diagram for you, look closely there will be some foam "washers" that go between the pivot points in the linkage I think that Mopar calls them "silencers" get those also I think they were just over $1 each. The linkage is great now, those parts took out all the slop in my linkage.

Yep, I ordered mine the Thursday before Christmas, and picked them up the Friday after. $12 for the straight(er) rod and $15 for the other. For silencers you can also use thin pieces of hose, about 3/16" or 1/4" slice.

Much better shifts. Now I'm back to what the stock tranny feels like.

The rods only come with the ends molded onto the rods, with the inserts in the ends. Can't get just the ends. It looks like Mopar puts the rod and insert in a mold then injection molds the outer piece on. It's no big job, I just pried the joints apart with a large screwdriver and then squeezed the new rods with sockets onto the balls with pliers. It only took about 30 minutes.

Ohhh, it's the main rod from the shifter....NOT one of the two shift rods. I was confused when you said it was the black insert. I truely apologize. Still dont know if they sell just that part. But you may be able to pirate one from a new $15 shift rod and pop it in.

Dude, just call up Cindy (it would seem she has some) and see if she'll break up a set for you. She's pretty accommodating if you ask nicely.

Just a little fyi, for the bushins, there is a cheap fix for them, go to autozone or advance or some place that sells "Help!" products and get the universal windshield wiper mounting bushings, you can make yourself a new set out of those and they are rubber! Thats what I used when mine went bad.
