Looks VERY nice! Well, except the engine bay, but at least it's got the V-6, dirty though it may be!

If I wasn't eyeball deep in TMs, I'd probably have one as a project...

The engine bay will be steam cleaned as soon as I get back to Nebraska. I'm working in Georgia right now, so it's at the shop getting struts/shocks and a general tune up.
Its super clean, all around (minus the engine bay), and runs like a top. It had one broken strut and idled at 2500RPM, but that's all being fixed.

Love those cars,

What struts are you putting in?

Stock ones, I'm sure.

This car is so much fun to drive, such an upgrade from my neon. I have zero issues passing people now and I get ricers revving their motors at me again!

What is the switch overhead for? You have a photo of it.

Built in fire suppression system was an option in 87 :)

Some fun history I found the other day

From what I can tell it just controls the bass levels, but I can't find much information on it and neither of my dads fieros had that option.

I think .07% had engine fires.
All of them that had fires were the four cylinders as well.

That was pretty interesting. I could tell that the person writing the article wasn't too fond of fieros, but to each their own. You can't beat the price I paid for this car, especially considering I drove it a thousand miles while I was home with few issues. :)

I just bought an 88' Formula basket case with a spare 88' chassis. I think these cars are way cool. You can swap in a modern 60* V6 like the 3400...they are like fleas in the junkyard. Good choice on the car!

looks to be in great shape!! those are such fun little cars. feels like driving a go-kart. I used to have a silver '86 with the v6. You can do a lot with those cars.. I think my favorite ones are the v8's. LOL. I thought I remember seeing someone with a turbo v6, as well.

the fire thing to fieros is like crankwalk to dsms or the fires in the z31 300zx's.. a small number were affected and it was blown out of proportion. But that's typical.

The yellow fiero website is pretty neat. Some interesting videos of the Pontiac in action, including one of it doing a top speed run on the Autobahn...that highway must be incredibly deadly because of how speed kills <insert sarcasm>

Congrats on your car, that 2.8 is a good engine :thumb:

I bought a rough old 4cly once... and drove it home... I had to stop three times due to a leaking VC and debris under the hood to put out the fire... :) true story.. It was frign funny really....

After that was fixed it was a fun little car though.. and no more problems..

A 3.4 with some kind of forced induction would be awesome...

The 3.8 SC ones get out of their own way quite nicely too!

Or go stealth and drop a 3.4 into it, they are just a bored and stroked 2.8L/3.1L! And you can find them cheap in PAP, they put them in lots of stuff, vans pop to mind...

I will say that, given a choice, I'd prefer an 88 GT or formula. In true GM fashion, once they actually got the formula right (decent engine/trans AND suspension), they kill it! I still think the turbo'd Quad 4 would have been a screamer!

I was thinking a 3900 V6. 233 hp with out the added plumbing. I agree, but even without the turbo, the HO Quad would have screamed!!

Any updates? I like these old fieros. The interiors are cool and they definitely handle well. They even came with a getrag gearset trans similar in strength to the 555 in some years. The 3.4 or even getting a turbo 3.1 setup bolted onto the 3.4 would be great. If they move the heavy slomaro around I imagine they would be plenty in a light car like a fiero. I've got a friend who is really into these car and once drove to Utah with a car hauler to get several of them. Let me know if you ever need any parts and I can give you his contact info.

I've still got her, but she's up for sale. It's starting to kill me to get in and out of her. This one does have the getrag 5speed. :)
It would be cool to drop something bigger into the engine bay, but if I keep her I need to get the correct sized tires on her first

POS.....a Neon R/T would hand this Fiero it's a$$.....these cars weren't easy to maintain and you'll be lucky to see mid 15's in the 1/4 mile! It's not fast!!!! You're lower so things seem faster......

nnaaa....the 60 degreee V6 is a much better choice, they are more reliable and can rev better. seem to put out bigger power #s too when heavily modded over the 90 degree blocks.

idk what the big hype is with the qaud 4s??? i used to blow the away with my 3.0L 5spd shadow. have u ever looked at the tq/hp specs? the power band is sooooo narrow tooo. id much rather have the V6. altho i do have a buddy with a 95 Z24 cavalier 2.4 Quad 4 converted with HO parts from a 90 GTZ and also turbo'd....

Id stick with the 60* family too. I liked the 3500 and 3900 motors.

Uh guys....the 3900 I mentioned is a 60* engine....lol.
Juggy, in the fiero it would have been sweet. Remember, I'm not talking about the 160 hp version. The 190 hp HO version would have put the fiero under 7 seconds 0-60 easy.

Quit acting like you know anything about GM and its offspring. You act like you work on them and know stuff about the General or something... :thumb:

If you are wanting a 60* GM motor, the choices are endless. Including the 3500, there is every other '00 motor out there as well(3100, 3300, 3400, 3900, 5300, etc).

3900 is LS based too right? I think I remember rods/pistons will work in that engine. Cheap go fast parts if so.

black86glhs
06-03-2011, 02:08 PM
It is a larger version of the 3500 v6. I don't believe it is based on the LS architecture. But I could be wrong.

wallace
06-03-2011, 02:23 PM
yeah sorry I meant the bore and stroke are similar? I think I read somewhere a guy was using some combination of LS based rods and pistons for his 3900 build. I bought an '88 with a complete 3500 that needs to be swapped in. I've got two .42/.48 Garretts too I was thinking of putting them in as well. Neat cars if you ask me, they have mid-engine and a very stiff frame design.

I never claimed it was fast. It's fun to drive and it's quick, but not fast. Fast are the 3.8SC or the Northstar ones.

forget dropping a v6 back in there. one of my instructors at auto tech had an 88 that he swapped in a cadillac northstar engine and trans into. he even made the traction control work, that car was stupid crazy fast, would do 190+ with a completely stock engine.
