There was a article in the KC about what transmissions are compatible when it comes to building a hybrid transmission. I can't seem to find it and wondered if anybody had the info available.

You need a 523 ring gear and mainshaft.

No ---- sherlock, at least on the 568/523 trans.

What I'm looking for is if I have a 89 555 then what years 520 do I need to get the shaft out of.

I have noticed that KC is a bit neglected maybe once you find out the hybrid info it can be added back.

89 Only.

Could you press the sleeve on the intermediate shaft and run the early int. shaft then? I believe you would have to source a the early 1st gear and 1/2 synchro, but it could be done right?

What sleeve would you be pressing on ? None of the 520/555/525 ever used the bearing sleeve on the intermediate shaft so I dont know what your asking ? In theory (and this is total speculation on my part)I think you could run the 87-88 intermediate shaft in an 89 transmission. You would need to source 1st and 2nd gear from an 87-88 555 so as to match the synchronizer setup. But I dont know what if anything is different from the 87-88 vs the 89 selector/slider rings and shift forks. That would be the real key question and whether or not its a go or no-go.

From what I understand the bearing in the front of the tras is larger on the 89' 555s just like the 523s and 568s. I believe I recall reading that there is a sleeve available which can be pressed onto the earlier shafts to ride in the larger bearing.

The parts book shows no seperate sleeve. 29197

what you may have been thinking of is Simon/turbovanman offers a service to repair the torn up bearing surface by turning down the shaft end and pressing a collar on so its returned to its original OD. However you could press a sleeve on the 89 shafts and would essentially turn it into a 90+ shaft with the larger OD.

Let me do some digging to double check my memory before I comment further.

OK, I did some checking and found what I was looking for. It seems as though I was off by a year though. I need to think more before I decide what my opinion is on parts interchange though. My head isn't clear after that search.

Russ posts up what I was talking about here:

The post from boostedmopar is pretty much word for word what I had here. Not sure where the old articles I had up went to.

On the topic of odd swaps, you could easily put an early mainshaft and 1/2 gear/synchro assembly into an 89' gearbox, nothing really changed as far as forks and sliders and such. The synchro hub changed obviously, to match the revised mainshaft used 89+, but that's it.
