I know there are a lot of knowlegeable people here, Hoping for a little direction.

Patient:
1997 Dodge ram 1500 4x4 5.2 auto 121k miles (second+ owner)

Shifts fine, has never slipped on me. Has been used for light towing (atv trailer, nothing heavier). When it shifts into overdrive it makes a sound like a knife being sharpened.
It is not a loud sound but noticible with the radio off. The fluid looks ok but I have never changed it in the 20k of owning it.

the knife sharpen sound could that be a band adjustment? or a premature sound of OD failing completely?

at 120k and not knowing the transmission service past, would it bad to do a filter/fluid change, or a complete flush? I was always told rule of thumb is once the fluid is dark changing to new fluid will cause it to slip from the friction material is no longer in the fluid (and already work off the pads)
