Help with 94 Ford Ranger 4.0L manual trans

Hey guys, I'm going to be taking a trip to MN next month to visit my dad. He's got a '94 Ford Ranger with the 4.0L engine and 5spd manual transmission with 4wd. The transmission went out and he's been looking all over to find a replacement. So far all he can find is a 180k mile unit for $450 which sounds like an awful deal if you ask me.

As far as I can find out, the transmission is a Mazda M5OD-R1. I've found a few promising auctions on eBay, but I'm not sure if I'm looking at the right one for his truck. It looks like there are a few different versions of this transmission and I have got to find one that will work with the 4.0L and 4wd. I'm not sure but it looks like the version that came with the 2.3L won't work.

Can anybody help me find the right one or point me in the right direction? I know very little about Fords and figured somebody here would be a lot more familiar with this than I am. Thanks in advance!:hail:

Phone the dealer with the VIN and they can tell you exactly what trans you have, then you can go from there, or if they wont' do it, post or PM me the VIN and I can do it.

I haven't heard back from my dad yet. He says his truck is buried in snow at the moment and it's at a shop about 20 miles from his house.

found this little chart; maybe it will help.. looks like you are correct with the model. and it appears the main differences is the 4.0 got different ratios.
