I thought I read somewhere that the 89 A555 used some of the same stuff the 568's had??

like mainly the 1-4th gear and sycros???

can someone fill me in on all this???

I have a 555 here from an 88. but I believe it has one of my old 89 gearsets. so if I can keep it for spare parts I may hold onto it...

89 will not interchange with 87-88 as far as I know. The 89 has the newer style synchros and I believe the gears are cut slightly different.

The 89 will interchange with a 90 only 568 If your doing a hybrid tranny.

3-4-5 speed gears (the ones on the intermediate shaft) are the SAME for every 555-568, 87-93

1-2 speed gears are unique to 87-88 (and the A555 used in the 89 Turbo Minivan, its essentially 87-88 internals), 2nd gear 89-93 is the same, 89-91 1st gear is different (3.00:1) and the 92-93 1st gear is different (3.31:1)

Change the last two digits to reflect the model year if you want to look for yourself.

simple ID for which gearset it is, look at 5th: nut retained, 89. c-clip retained, early.

sweet. so your saying i can use this complete trans for guts and make a hybrid with a 90/523 trans??? and not even have to take apart my 568?

Are you sure its an 89 gearset (remember the 1-2 compatability) and I guess when you mean 'hybrid' your using the 523 ring and pinion/intermediate shaft. Otherwise you would need to put the bearing race on the end of the 555 pinion shaft.

yep swap the ring/pinion.
the trans is actually an 88. but I am to believe its the old 89 gearset I had sold to the previous owner (swapped out the guts)
i just need to pop the end cover off to verify it has the 5th gear held on with the nut

edit..im guessin i also need to use 5th gear and reverse from the 523...
