So what are your EGT's on you 5.9L. And how high have you gotten?

mine are
600rpm no load 267*
1000rpm no load 300*
2000-3000 24psi full load 1112*

max temp reached was 1275* at 28psi

---------- Post added at 08:18 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:17 PM ----------

And Cruise 500-700*at 5-8psi

Out of curiosity, where are you taking the readings at?

Right at the exhaust manifold turbo flange.

Right at the exhaust manifold turbo flange.

Thanks. I always wonder where the diesel guys are taking the readings from these days. I know the old timers would take them in the DP on tractors.

Well, you can take them on the downpipe, post turbo, or in the manifold, pre turbo. Makes more sense in the manifold, though, as you're really trying not to melt pistons (so the closer to the pistons, the better).

My truck is currently boosting to 28-30 psi and I rarely exceed 1000. Actually, I've almost never exceeded 1000.

You can see where I tapped into the manifold in this picture:

really? what turbine housing do you have?
I know you changed gov. springs but did you mess with timing and turn up the pump yet?
my auto on long hills (speeding of course) will get right up there

Yeah, 366 spring, pump turned up as far as it will go (on my truck that's not that far apparently...apparently on some pumps you need to weld a bead at the end of the fuel screw because the threads bottom out before you get remotely close to runaway). Bosch 190 injectors, 3 inch Magnaflow that dumps in front of the rear tires and the stock turbo with a 12CM housing with the WG welded shut. Oh and 1/8 timing and the starwheel turned up to keep the fuel from coming on too early (ie keep the smoke down).

I think the 12CM housing really keeps the EGTs down, which kind of goes against conventional thinking. I'm guessing that would change when towing, but I don't do that on the regular...

Funny thing...I was driving back to work today and got on a particularly straight and lonely stretch of road, got into 4th gear at around 40 and just held the pedal down until..well, I didn't pay much attention to the speedo...70s probably. Hit 1100...and I said it couldn't be done. ;)

I wounder if turning up the boost somemore would help burn any extra fuel i have in the exhast pre turbo to bring the egt down some .

Yes more boost will cool the EGT's to a point. Problem is your truck has the HE341 turbo, wich is the smaller of the 2 turbos the 5.9 CR's came with, and you are probably on the edge of its efficiency range with your programmer on the high setting. I believe 32-35 psi is about all it is good for, safety wise. You are prbably safe for now with just the Banks on there with that turbo, but if it were a Smarty or an Edge on your truck turned all the way up you would be seing 14-1500* EGT's easily in seconds of going WOT.

With 3/4 tank of gas I ran around 900 at 65mph cruise :thumb:, with straight diesel on the floor 1250...well in a 96 anyhow.

egts are like sticking your hand in an oven it dosnt burn sticking your hand in an oven at 400 degs but leave it in there for some time and it will eventually burn. You can run 1200deg continulously and 1500-1800 in short burst's . My old 98 12v made 377hp and 922ftlbs no fuel plate, 4gsk, 5in exhaust and intake at 1500deg

lol no fuel plate 4gsk 5in exhaust, and some injectors of some sort had them in when i got it other then that i had maybe $500 into mods but i had 4 different transmissions in it stock trans didnt last long even with built valvebody my dad has a salvage yard so i would just burn one up and throw another in lol and my heavy foot didnt help. It made that power but it wasnt able to tow anything as i didnt have enough air it was just a pavement pounder i didnt ever tow anything

So you say pulling heavy load long long upgrades 1200deg is safe to a point???

I have seen to many (had too replace) duramaxs for split pistons from being over fueled.

thats what they say 1200 continous, but also got to remember on the cummins the way the intakes are desighned number 5 and 6 dont get as much air we see alot of cummins come through here with melted 5 and 6 pistons
