Well I figured i'd start my own project log thread (how long has this been here?)

Well on 11/08/10 I picked up #20 GLHS. I got it from a guy in Hamburg NY which is about 3 hours and 20 mins from my place. He was nice enough to let me drive it all the way home on his plates as he thought I wouldnt have a problem with the car. Aside from a few problems it wasnt too bad. The turbo functions really nicely.

He did a few 'hack' things to it, including a wired up toggle for the radiator fan which consisted of the lead to the fan and a stipped end going into the positive clamp on the battery. (:confused2:) The wiper linkage is messed up but that shouldnt be too big of a problem. A couple stalls and a few intense buckings later it was in my driveway. I picked it up for 1250 which was quite nice considering the shape of the body and underside of it.

As far as Shelby specific stuff it has the mobil 1 plaque and the vac diagrams under the hood, the centurian wheels(they need to be stripped it looks terrible), the Shelby valve cover and 2 piece intake. As well as all of the original rad/ic and airbox system. Now for the pictures.

Yeah...youre tellin me haha.

Ive got a ton of upgrades ill be doing. First I gotta figure out a couple bugs before I actually start the modding though.

Mods include:
A520 w/ moly plate (its what I have right now haha) 89CB ported head, exhaust manifold, large FMIC, AFPR, +40s, S60 w/3in SV, full 3in exhaust. And to bring it back to original cosmetically :) Its in black epoxy primer now so it wont be too hard to finish it up because the body is super straight.

saw that thing on craigslist a couple times and the blue interior bits and the steering wheel were enough to keep me from thinking it was a glhs

It is definately a GLHS. I thought the same thing as you until I got the vin confirming it.

Ok starting to do some things since the weather is a lot better here now. :o

I decided to start by finishing up a head I have and I know is good. The car smoked a little bit on startup and when you got on it pretty good. So I assumed it was valve seals. Which I still think it is. Anyway, I finished up the head, and cleaned it up a little.

Now this isnt going to be one of those meticulously clean, everything needs to be spotless builds. It will be someday but now I just want to drive it and have fun.

After I finished the head, I went and started tearing into the motor.

Took out all that pesky non-working AC stuff.

Popped the valve cover off, and its still really clean in there. Kinda suprised me.
http://www.turbo-mopar.com/forums/photopost/data/500/medium/motorvcoff2.jpg
And finally pulled the head off...
http://www.turbo-mopar.com/forums/photopost/data/500/medium/motorheadoff3.jpg
Used a good ole timing belt to pull it out. LOL, I couldnt find anything. Pretty risky.

doesnt napa have a load leveler you can bum? ;)

be very careful with those dowel pins in the block. many a head has been gouged by those bastards.

id get another person to help with the final guiding of the head back onto the block.

Well just a quick update to this thread. Got it running today and I got a vid of its first start up!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KjsdTsU-k1M

Check it out, also I forgot a vac line to the TB thats why it starts acting retarded lol. Also I need to check it with a fuel pressure gauge because its running real rich.

Now I have to install the gauges, get some new front tires, finish the exhaust and get it inspected. Among other things haha.

Aries_Turbo

cool!!

Orangetona
05-26-2011, 10:42 PM
Haha yep, I turned the fuel pressure down a little (unknown) and capped the TB nipple and it runs real smooth now.

I really need to put the FMIC in there too.

Aries_Turbo

idles good too?

Orangetona
05-26-2011, 11:38 PM
Yep, it was that TB nipple being open causing it to be dumb. Sometimes the map goes wonky though. Not really sure there yet. I need to do some stuff before I run it more.

that thing sounds pretty awesome man! congrats on a successful startup! :thumb:

Orangetona
05-27-2011, 10:38 PM
Thanks, itll sound even better when theres an exhaust on there lol.

Still gotta get front tires, change the wiper motor and linkage, run all the gauges, figure out what I want to do with that mess the previous owner called a successful cd player install (look at that video closely...) and some other odds and ends.

Well im actually updating this. I had the top end together and running as you saw in the video above. But when I had it apart I forgot to remedy the little 3" swingvalve/bolt/spring/nut problem and instead of just helicoiling it or something easy I said eff it and I just pulled the whole engine out LOL. I decided to make it a little prettier under there. Im not too far yet but heres some of the progress:

At this point I was only going to pull the head off and just drill and tap the holes for the SV
38765

Then I decided to just pop the engine out and do everything I wanted. Including popping the trans out and putting the A520 or finding me an A555 and throw the moly plate in.

This is my first Lbody car and im suprised I pulled the block out with the trans in and the crank pulley on. AC crank pulley no less :D

Updating this a bit. I ended up finding an A520 that I needed to convert over. I gotta get some axles, im gonna do the rod shift bracket adapters. Anyone have any input on these? Anyway heres some painting progress so far.

I've got some planet color wrinkle coat black that im spraying through a gun. I just have to do it. At 100 for materials (my cost) it hurts a bit.

The waterpump isnt like a cast blast. Its a high metallic wheel coating color. It looks pretty good (a lot better in person). Too bad the casting sucks though LOL

Looking pretty decent now.

So I decided to go with the 'gapped hood' with this car. I know all you ricers will like it!

That motor looks nice!!
I was asking about the Water Pump Cause I have my Iroc rt apart and I sandblasted the water pump and polished it. Couldn't decide if I wanted to leave it polished or paint it.

Orangetona
04-27-2012, 04:15 PM
Thanks!

If the pump has as much 'extra casting' as my waterpump does it would be a pita to polish, but I bet it would look really good.

Side note, I didnt paint the exhaust manifold or the turbo...why? Because I did before I took it apart this time and it looked like that. It was only on there running for a few months

You've gotta have some GOOOD paint for that to stay on at temps over 1000*. I had a guy coat my swingvalve in something, can't remember exactly, Xylar maybe? JT knows because I asked him about it. Other than that, not much can be done, unless you get it ceramic coated. Looks good though. Get it ready for SDAC please.

Im pretty sure I will have it done. If the weather ever gets warmer here ill be wrenching on it endlessly haha. I actually used ceramic header paint and well...it doesnt work haha.

Thanks Jon!

Car looks like it has a lot of potential. I like it. I've always been a big fan of the 87 glhs. So is the motor back in? Time is ticking! Less than 2 mos!

Motor isnt back in yet. Waiting on flywheel to be turned, then I slap it all together. Idk what I want to do with the A520 going in it though. Buy the adapter from omnipotent or convert to cable shift. I dont have the cables or the adapter yet :/
